Our April book will be From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond: My Journey to Understand Racism in America by Dave Markward. Dave grew up in Dubuque and spent time in the Quad Cities. His local connections make the book especially relevant.

On Wednesday, April 22nd Dave Markward, the author of the book, will be at the Rooting Out Poverty book club to meet with readers. Unfortunately, I'll be unavailable to attend. But you should not miss this opportunity to meet the author and discuss his work.

Alta Price (she/her)

Read more about the book at Goodreads:

"Embark on a transformative journey with Dave Markward as he transitions from an upbringing in an almost exclusively white community to a life enriched by diversity in From Dubuque to Selma and My Journey to Understand Racism in America."

"Intertwining Dave's personal growth with significant historical events and figures, this remarkable memoir delves into the heart of America's racial divides. Through thought-provoking questions at the start of each chapter, Dave challenges readers to assess their own understanding of racism and their progress to understand and value diversity. His heartfelt narration and candid reflections on his experiences make this journey relatable, inspiring, and deeply enlightening."

"From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond is more than just a memoir - it's a call to action. It urges readers to step beyond their comfort zones, to educate themselves, and foster compassion. It emphasizes the crucial role of education in combating racism, promoting inclusivity, and shaping a more equitable world."

"This book is a must-read for those yearning to understand the complex fabric of American racism and seeking inspiration to effect change. Whether you're an educator, student, or simply someone who values social justice, Dave's journey is a testament to the power of learning, reflection, and the human spirit. Let it guide you on your path to racial enlightenment and unity."

We’re sure you agree that it’s never been more important to continue expressing and building people power to reclaim our democracy from the fascist surge defining Trump 2.0.  Aligned with the national Indivisible organization, ACLU,  and an impressively diverse coalition, we aim to build on previous successes and mass well over 5,000 people in downtown Davenport.

Assembling initially at the LeClaire Park picnic shelter just off the end of Main St., we will rally with speakers on diverse topics from 1-1:45 pm. Tables for voter registration and other activist opportunities will also be available in this area.

After 1:45, we will encourage participants to spread out across downtown sidewalks to wave their signs and chant in peaceful protest (see attached map).

Attached you will find a half-page format flyer for printing and distribution. We encourage your members to place these flyers around the Quad Cities.

Please share this announcement with your friends and family. And please urge everyone to go to the Mobilize site and register. It is not a requirement, but it is how we manage numbers and impart up-to-date information.

Message from our president

A Message from the PACG President

As Progressive Action for the Common Good's newest President, (possibly) youngest president, and certainly the first one that can be classed as a Millenial, I should send a Presidential message before the year is half over. PACG celebrated its 20th anniversary of educating and empowering people to take action last year.

Remember when George W. Bush seemed to be trying to go down in history as the "Worst President Ever?" (yeah, back in those days). That's when PACG got started.

A pessimist might might look at current events and wonder what we've accomplished.

Our accomplishments? Many. The important one in this moment is that we have a solid organization that is ready for these times. Thank you to my predecessors! We have found that educating people is not sufficient to convince them; different people are convinced by different arguments using the same facts. But education is necessary, especially when misinformation is rampant.

My goal for PACG is to educate and empower people to take action, and to continue building the organization to make progress for as long as there is progress to be made.

I look forward to working with you!

David Anderson (he/him)

This is a direct threat to water quality which will impact Iowans' health and safety. Complete the Iowa Environmental Council Action Alert to tell your representatives to restore this vital network of water quality sensors.

The Fight to Stop Big Oil Pumping Billions More into Plastics

Sisters of St. Francis

Plastic production has doubled in the past 20 years and is projected to double or even triple again soon. In her new book, "Plastic Inc: Big Oil, Big Money and the Plan to Trash Our Future," environmental journalist, Beth Gardiner, reports that petrochemicals—used largely to make plastic—are expected to drive future oil demand growth. As energy markets shift away from fossil fuels, oil companies are relying on plastics to sustain drilling and profits, a strategy she warns poses a serious threat to the climate.
