At this point we don't know a lot of details about what each of our teams will be doing, but we have a general idea. There are numerous ways you can be involved. Planned Parenthood of the North Central States

The Iowa Supreme Court decision on the six-week abortion ban will be released on Friday, June 28th. The six-week ban was passed in 2018 but was found to be unconstitutional and never went into effect. Republican lawmakers passed another six-week abortion ban in June 2023, but an injunction was placed on the ban by the Iowa Supreme Court. On Friday the Court will decide whether to let the ban go into effect or not.

In response to the upcoming Iowa Supreme Court decision, Planned Parenthood has organized a rally either in celebration of our retained rights of reproductive freedom or against the cruelty of imposing an abortion ban in Iowa. We firmly believe that reproductive decisions need to be made between an individual and their health care provider. The government should not intervene in any way.

The Gender Equity forum of PACG invites you and your friends to join other supporters of reproductive rights in Lafayette Park at 6:00 pm. We will gather and walk down 4th ST during rush hour for maximum visibility. Planned Parenthood will have plenty of signs in case you don't have your own.

Women's March, Gender Equity Forum

The Women's March is promoting events across the nation this June to support women's reproductive healthcare and freedoms. The Davenport event will be Saturday, June 22nd at Vander Veer Park in Davenport (Note: the Women's March has declared June 24th the National Day of Action but in Davenport we will rally on June 22nd). Given that women in Iowa are on the brink of losing their reproductive rights, the Gender Equity Forum urges you to attend this rally! Please sign up in advance to let the organizer know you are coming, in case there are weather-related changes.

Within a few weeks the Iowa Supreme Court will decide whether to allow the near-total abortion ban passed by the legislature to go into effect. The Iowa ACLU has been coordinating statewide efforts to fight for reproductive freedom, and the Gender Equity Forum has been working with them. Once the court decision is announced, we need to be prepared to act quickly. We trust that the ACLU will guide us in taking any appropriate actions.

In the meantime, join the Iowa ACLU Reproductive Rights team. This link takes you to a place to join the team (scroll down on that page). As a member of the team, you will be kept updated and informed of actions you can take to help.

Due to the July 4th holiday, we will be meeting on the second Thursday of the month, July 11th, at 5 pm for Green Drinks. Nina Struss and Arsum Pathak from Prairie Rivers Network will share highlights of the Quad Cities Climate and Vulnerability Assessment, the region’s first effort to identify environmental factors that threaten the vulnerable people in the Quad Cities. With nature-based solutions and strong local commitment, the plan promises to bolster the Quad Cities’ resilience in the face of climate change.

Celebrating Four Years of Standing for Racial Equality! - After Action Report Update Update

Civil Rights Forum

Members of the PACG Civil Rights Forum were grateful that all three local television stations as well as The Quad City Times covered the fourth anniversary of our Racial Equality Rally on June 8th, 2024. Glenda Guster remarked that "Letting people know about the rally may encourage more folks to join us. We always have extra signs and flags, and all are welcome."

Glenda Guster and Caryn Unsicker, along with a handful of other PACG members, began standing for racial equality and justice after George Floyd's murder in 2020 because they knew the press coverage would die down and they wanted to keep the conversation about racial equality alive. They have stood on the Slumberland/Party City corner of John Deere Road and 16th Street, Moline from noon to 12:30 just about every Saturday since then. Unsicker said they are encouraged each week by the large number of passersby of all racial and ethnic backgrounds who honk, wave and give them a thumbs up. They have vowed to continue their weekly rallies for as long as they are able in order to achieve racial healing and equality in this country.
