PACG Trivia Contest continues...

Anniversary Planning Committee

As part of our upcoming 20th Anniversary Gala the evening of Sunday, October 19th, we will be playing PACG Trivia. (By the way, you can register now!) To give you all a head start (as well as a nostalgic look back at some of our past events), we will have Progressive Action Update (PAU) posts about a past event, action or concern.

Here's the next in this series:

Question: When did our PACG Newsletter Team decide to switch our Mailchimp to Tuesday mornings (instead of sending them sort of randomly as the need arose)?

Answer: In November of 2014!
Read that announcement here.
And read that entire email issue here.

PACG Trivia Contest!

Anniversary Planning Committee
As part of our upcoming 20th Anniversary Gala the evening of Sunday, October 19th, we will be playing PACG Trivia. To give you all a head start (as well as a nostalgic look back at some of our past events), we will have regular Progressive Action Update (PAU) posts about a past event, action or concern.

Here's the next in this series:

Question: What was the PACG Die In and why did we organize that?

Answer: Our Health Care Reform Forum and Campaign for Better Health Care (CBHC) wanted to bring attention to the fact that Health Care is a Moral Value. People die if they don't have access to quality, affordable healthcare.

Read our Die In announcement email here for more details on the event.

A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy  by Nathan Thrall

In September we will read A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy by Nathan Thrall. The book won a Pulitzer prize for general non-fiction. This is a timely read as it deals with the struggles of those living in Israel/Palestine.

Contact me for the Zoom link if you want to come that way.

Alta Price

Read more about the book at Goodreads:

"Immersive and gripping, an intimate story of a deadly accident outside Jerusalem that unravels a tangle of lives, loves, enmities, and histories over the course of one revealing, heartbreaking day."

"Five-year-old Milad Salama is excited for a school trip to a theme park on the outskirts of Jerusalem. On the way, his bus collides with a semitrailer. His father, Abed, gets word of the crash and rushes to the site. The scene is chaos—the children have been taken to different hospitals in Jerusalem and the West Bank; some are missing, others cannot be identified. Abed sets off on an odyssey to learn Milad’s fate. It is every parent’s worst nightmare, but for Abed it is compounded by the maze of physical, emotional, and bureaucratic obstacles he must navigate because he is Palestinian. He is on the wrong side of the separation wall, holds the wrong ID to pass the military checkpoints, and has the wrong papers to enter the city of Jerusalem. Abed’s quest to find Milad is interwoven with the stories of a cast of Jewish and Palestinian characters whose lives and histories unexpectedly converge."

"In A Day in the Life of Abed Salama, Nathan Thrall—hailed for his “severe allergy to conventional wisdom” (Time)—offers an indelibly human portrait of the struggle over Israel/Palestine and a new understanding of the tragic history and reality of one of the most contested places on earth."

PACG Trivia Contest continues...

Anniversary Planning Committee

As part of our upcoming 20th Anniversary Gala the evening of Sunday, October 19th, we will be playing PACG Trivia. To give you all a head start (as well as a nostalgic look back at some of our past events), we will have Progressive Action Update (PAU) posts about a past event, action or concern.

Here's the next in this series:

Question: Our First Annual Picnic was held on September 22, 2013. We had pies at this first event but something about how they were distributed was different than the way we do them now. Explain.

Answer: We used a silent auction to determine the pie winners!
Read the After Action Report here.

Our Second Annual Picnic in the Park, as it was called in 2015, did mention the pie auction in the flyer. Here's a link to the Mailchimp After Action Report.

Of course these days we call this event the Annual Picnic and Pie Auction and it's NOT a silent auction.

The Importance of Defending the Rule of Law Luncheon - After Action Report

Picture
Fifty-nine people attended the Importance of Defending the Rule of Law luncheon event at WIU's Riverfront Hall on Friday, August 8th, to hear Professor Sally Frank, Drake University Law School, explain in layman's terms how our rule of law is under attack and why it is important to recognize this and do what we can now to preserve our Democracy.  Attendees asked many pertinent questions afterwards.

This event was part of the Quad Cities Civic Conversations series initiated by One Human Family and co-sponsored by Progressive Action for the Common Good, Iowa Citizen Action Network, and Quad Cities Interfaith.  There will be pertinent events every three months, so watch for them in this Progressive Action Update and elsewhere.

Support for your Trans  child - No Hate in Our States

How To Support Your Trans Child, According to Experts and Trans Kids Themselves

Gender Equity Forum

Them

Whether your child is a transgender girl, a trans boy, nonbinary, or anything other than cisgender, we live during a particularly difficult time for supportive parents of trans kids.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 40% of trans kids aged 13-17 live in states that have passed bans on gender-affirming care. Since states started enacting such bans in 2021, numerous families have uprooted their lives and moved to different states that protect access to such care — and some have even left the country altogether. That’s not even to mention the deleterious effects of anti-trans legislation and rhetoric on the mental health of trans kids.
Read this important article here. And if you haven't already signed up for news from Them, do that here.

Question: Did you know that we had a Community Garden? What group, planned, planted and maintained it and where was it?

Answer:
The PACG Local Foods Initiative Issue Forum was responsible for all of this work. Read an email announcing a monthly meeting in July of 2009 here.

QC Electric Vehicle (EV) Rally
Sunday, September 14 from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm

Freight House Farmers Market
421 W River DR
Davenport, IA (map)

Environmental Forum
Picture
To celebrate National Drive Electric Month (September 12 through October 12), the PACG Environmental Forum will join groups in over 200 cities across the country hosting an electric vehicle (EV) event. The Quad Cities Electric Vehicle Rally will be held on Sunday, September 14 from 10:30 am to 3 pm at the Freight House Farmers Market. You will find us in the Freight House west parking lot next to Modern Woodman Park.

If you’re curious about owning an EV, here’s your opportunity to visit with EV manufacturers. Car dealers have been invited to showcase their available EVs and plug-in hybrids, answer your questions, and arrange for a test-drive. You can visit with EV owners who will display their own vehicles, to learn the facts about owning an EV. Please be aware that the “Big Beautiful Bill” ends the clean vehicle tax credits for new EVs, plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and pre-owned electrified vehicles after September 30, 2025. If you’re interested in purchasing an EV, don’t miss this limited cost saving opportunity.

EV owners will be there to share their experiences and network with other EV owners and EV manufacturers. If you would like to display your EV at our rally, let us know. To properly identify you and your vehicle during the event, please complete a registration form (below) and return it to [email protected] and enter “QC EV Rally” in the email Subject line. For our planning purposes, please indicate the time that you and your vehicle will be available at the event. Both a Word and pdf format of this form are attached here.
