Join the Peace Bus to Washington DC to protest the Iraq war!
September 23 to 25, 2005
We are putting together materials to mail to you all but are waiting for some final details. It looks like we may be leaving from Village Shopping Center instead of Northpark. We will keep you posted.
Here is latest in any case. Please be at departure point at 2:30 pm on Friday, September 23, 2005. We are planning DC Send Off Rally with press coverage. If you would be willing to be interviewed about why you are going, please email us to let us know. Note the song by Meridian Green below that we will sing together at our Sendoff Rally. Try to listen to it ahead of time so you are familiar with it. We have attached the words below.
If your plans change, especially if you are going on a donated ticket, let me know ASAP as I have other people on a waiting list to go if someone cannot attend. We don’t want the bus to go with any empty seats. Please double check with friends or relatives with whom you are travelling for whom we do not have emails to make sure they can still come.
Bus Ride Details
You may bring food and drink; however no sunflower seeds and no alcohol. Be sure to be neat and clean up after yourself so we don’t get hit with a $250 cleanup fee. (If a couple of people could bring garbage bags for clean-up that would be great).
The following are available on the bus: AM/FM cassette, VCR, PA system, reclining seats, armrests, footrests, individual lights and air controls, and air conditioning.
I would suggest for the most part you use personal CD or Cassette players to be sensitive to your neighbors on the bus. (That is, once you’ve had your fill of camp songs and “99 bottles of beer on the wall.”)
No smoking or chewing tobacco is allowed.
Bring your own videos. The VCR will be operated only by the driver.
In the interest of comfort, safety and sleeping, I would suggest that there be quiet time zone from 11 pm (at the latest) until 7 am (at the earliest) to allow those who can sleep to do so. I would also recommend bringing pillows, throws, ear plugs (I highly recommend the wax kind that swimmers use – you can get them at Walgreen’s or Target).
You will have opportunity to change your clothes. There is a restroom on the bus. And there will be stops along the way for meals, where you could also change.
Don’t leave anything of great value on the bus; the company is not responsible for lost items. The bus will be locked when the operator is away from the bus.
Saturday, Sept. 24 March on Washington - Schedule of Events
The Saturday, Sept. 24th March on Washington promises to be a huge, powerful expression of the mounting peace and justice sentiment in the country. The ongoing horrors of the war in Iraq and events in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina have made this mobilization even more timely and important.
Confirmed speakers and performers so far include Cindy Sheehan, NAACP Executive Chairman Julian Bond, Fernando Suarez del Solar, Jim Hightower, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, Greg Palast, professional basketball player Etan Thomas, Suheir Hammad, speakers from the devastated Gulf Coast, The Coup, Le Tigre, Steve Earle, Joan Baez, and Sweet Honey in the Rock. A map of the march route will be posted soon, and in the meantime, we want you to know that for the first time in many years we will march in Pennsylvania AV, right in front of the White House.
10:00 am: Peace & Justice Festival begins, Washington Monument Grounds
11:30 am: Rally at the Ellipse
12:30 pm: March steps off from Ellipse
3:00 pm: Operation Ceasefire Free Concert featuring Cindy Sheehan at the Washington Monument Grounds
Return on the Metro by 8 pm to get back on our bus. Cell numbers of bus captains will be provided to all.
Walking To Washington Song by Meridian Green
(Listen on Spotify here.)
We are all walking to Washington
We walk until peace has come
The carpenter lays down his hammer
The gangster lays down his gun
The clerk puts away the paper
And no more work gets done
And we all start walking towards Washington
And we walk until peace has come
The banker's losing interest
The TV's off the air
The malls are standing empty
'Cause nobody is there
We're all walking towards Washington
We walk until peace has come
The driver parks the beer truck
The junkie stops taking dope
The 12 steppers move the meeting
Down the road to hope
We're all walking towards Washington
We walk until peace has come
Some people are too busy
Some people are afraid
Some people just start walking
And become a big parade
We're all walking towards Washington
We walk until peace has come
We walk until freedom is won
We walk until justice is done
We walk until peace has come

Further update:
Hey, want to get mailing postal out to folks so need to know about parking situation. We will be leaving from old Eagle's lot in Village Shopping Center.
The organizers are recommending that buses drop people at Metro stations instead of trying to drive into the Mall:
- Buses from the West and North park at Shady Grove, Md. Metro Station on the Red Line, get off at Metro Center (RT ticket, $3.70, senior and disabled $2.90)
- Buses from the West and South park at Vienna, Va. Metro Station on the Orange Line, get off at Smithsonian (RT ticket, $4.70, senior and disabled $3.60)
- Have one person buy tickets for all and pass them out along with return tickets. I think we have enough donated to cover the cost of that.
- Then people will walk from Metro station to the Washington monument.
I'm sure the traffic is oging to be a nightmare, as well as parking for the bus. So the bus just stays parked out at the metro station and people will need to be back there at 8 pm. Is anyone going to need a wheel chair?? (I have one).
