Invest Some Money in Making Change

You don’t have to spend any money to have an impact. What you choose to buy - and don’t buy – makes a difference. Here are some resources for supporting your values with your money.

Grab Your Wallet
Read this guide to flexing your consumer power for democracy.

Buycott
This site lets you choose campaigns on issues you care about (for example, Support Black Owned and Run Companies, Stop Buying Products Manufactured Using Prison Slave Labor). An app for your phone lets you scan product barcodes to see whether the manufacturer’s practices match your principles.

Green America
“Our mission is to harness economic power – the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace – to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.” Some of their tools include:
  • Break up with your mega-bank – find a socially responsible bank or a credit union
  • Take charge of your card – move to a credit card that supports people and the planet
  • Fossil fuel divestment – move your money to fossil free investments
  • Supports Fair Trade and ending sweat shops
  • National Green Pages – a list of businesses certified by Green America for their social and environmental practices

Buy Local – Eat Local – Go Local
Spending your money at a local independent business, rather than a big box retailer or chain restaurant, is good for the economy and the environment. More of the dollars stay in the community, benefitting your friends and neighbors. Local independent makers cut down on processing, packaging and transportation waste, benefitting the environment.

Donate to a Progressive Group
Organizations working on the issues you care about need dollars and volunteer hours. If you can afford to donate to PACG or any of the organizations listed in this handbook, that is an effective way for you to help make change.
