Iowa ACLU Door-Knock Day of Action - Update
Saturday, May 18th at 1 pm

Private residence in Bettendorf
Our PACG activists, especially those interested in gender equity, are invited to participate in this statewide Door-Knock Day of Action on May 18 sponsored by the Iowa ACLU. This action is to mobilize voters to stand for reproductive freedom. We will be covering parts of Bettendorf.

Please watch the Iowa ACLU online video to complete the training for this door-knocking action. The recorded training link is here (the passcode is dn=$Mi8Y).

You will need to contact me for the address to pick up your materials. Click on my name below and I will email you the address.

Alta Price

From Becca Eastwood, Advocacy Campaign Manager, Iowa ACLU:

In a devastating vote last July, the Iowa state legislature passed a near total abortion ban.

In less than two months, the Iowa Supreme Court will decide the future of that ban.

While we can’t control the outcome of the case, we can make sure we are mobilizing as many Iowans as possible to stand for reproductive freedom.

Join us on Saturday, May 18 to hit the doors in Bettendorf and talk to our fellow Iowans directly!

Register for Door-Knock Day of Action on May 18

The actions that WE take mean the difference between an Iowa where we make our own decisions about our bodies & futures or one where politicians make them for us.

Personal conversations with our fellow Iowans are the most effective way to build the power we need. So let’s hit the doorsteps!

Sign up today to join ACLU volunteers in Bettendorf for this statewide action!

We provide:
  • Comprehensive training
  • Script & all materials
  • List of addresses (these will all be folks we believe are open to this issue)

You provide:
  • 1.5-2 hours of your time
  • Maybe a friend to bring with you!

For May we will read and discuss The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg. I loved learning this largely forgotten early history of women in aviation. And the book was just fun! Contact me for the Zoom link if you want to come that way.

Here is more information from Goodreads:

Poland, 1909
Stanislaw is determined to escape the Russians and follow his brother to America, a land where anything seems possible.

Wisconsin, 1941
With all the men off to war, Fritzi and her sisters must learn men’s work -- from fixing flats to driving the tow truck. They add their own touches, too: neat little caps, short skirts and roller skates, and the All-Girl Filling Station is born. Their peace doesn’t last long though: skilled women are needed to fly planes for the war effort.

Alabama, 2005
Mrs Sookie Earle has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to putting her feet up. But then one day a package arrives. Its contents knock Sookie sideways, propelling her back to the 1940s, and four irrepressible sisters whose wartime adventures force them to reimagine who they are, and what they are capable of.

Chip in for a chance to win in 2024!

Once again, this year PACG is participating in the John Deere Birdies for Charity drive! The John Deere Classic runs from July 1st through 7th this year. Here is some information from the Birdies for Charity website about what this means for us:

When you chip in to help area charities, you could win! But your favorite charity will be the real winner. That’s because participating charities receive 100% of the donations pledged to them in this program, plus a bonus from the Birdies for Charity Bonus Fund which is a guaranteed 5% match.

John Deere Classic week is always exciting. Not just for the tournament, but also for what the tournament means for charities. Since 1971, the John Deere Classic has delivered over $159 million to regional charities, most of it through its innovative Birdies for Charity program. No other event on the PGA TOUR does it better - and it's the generous and hardworking nature of this area that makes it happen!

Progressive Action Update readers, you can win a two-year lease on a new car by submitting your pledge donation by June 26th!

And whatever you give to PACG through Birdies for Charity increases your donation by 5% through their generous matching offer.

Click this link or the button to donate online to PACG! Our "Bird" is #2363
https://birdiesforcharity.com/donate?charity=2363  Then click Donate Now.

A new law will ask public schools to teach the “histories, contributions, and perspectives” of marginalized groups.

Washington has passed a law that will push public schools to adopt LGBTQ+-inclusive curricula, making it the seventh state to mandate the inclusion of LGBTQ+ topics in school materials.

Governor Jay Isnlee signed Senate Bill 5462 into law on March 18. Under the law, Washington school districts will be required to adopt curricula that include the “histories, contributions, and perspectives” of marginalized groups, including people of color, disabled people, and LGBTQ+ people.

PACG Book Club - The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again

For April we will read and discuss The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again by Robert D. Putnam. I became interested in this author's work after seeing the documentary Join or Die at the Figge, hosted by Clock, Inc. Building community, as addressed by his life's work, is also central to our work at PACG.

Here is more information from Goodreads:
An eminent political scientist’s brilliant analysis of economic, social, and political trends over the past century demonstrating how we have gone from an individualistic “I” society to a more communitarian “We” society and then back again—and how we can learn from that experience to turn the corner towards a stronger, more unified nation, from the author of Bowling Alone and Our Kids.

Deep and accelerating inequality; unprecedented political polarization; vitriolic public discourse; a fraying social fabric; public and private narcissism—Americans today seem to agree on only one thing: This is the worst of times.

But we’ve been here before. During the Gilded Age of the late 1800s, America was highly individualistic, starkly unequal, fiercely polarized, and deeply fragmented, just as it is today. However as the twentieth century opened, America became—slowly, unevenly, but steadily—more egalitarian, more cooperative, more generous; a society more focused on our responsibilities to one another and less focused on our narrower self-interest. Sometime during the 1960s, however, our nation turned another corner, and all of these trends reversed, leaving us in today’s disarray.

In a sweeping overview of more than a century of history, drawing on his inimitable combination of statistical analysis and storytelling, Robert Putnam analyzes a remarkable confluence of trends that brought us from an “I” society to a “We” society and then back again. He draws inspiring lessons for our time from an earlier era, when a dedicated group of reformers righted the ship, putting us on a path to becoming a society once again based on community. Engaging, revelatory, and timely, this is Putnam’s most ambitious work yet, a fitting capstone to a brilliant career.

Iowa's tested waters are dangerous! - Of Interest to Our Members

More than half of Iowa’s tested streams and lakes are ‘impaired’

Environmental Forum

From the Iowa Capital Dispatch:
By:
Jared Strong - March 15, 2024

There are at least 721 water body segments in Iowa that do not meet water quality standards for recreation, public water supplies and the protection of aquatic life, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR has drafted its latest list of “impaired” waters that it is required to submit to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency every two years. The list is based on data collected by the department and numerous other entities between 2020 and 2022, and it is used to guide restrictions for stream pollution for sources such as wastewater treatment systems.

The number of impaired water body segments — which can be lakes, wetlands and parts of streams — declined about 4% from the last report in 2022.

But just 24% of stream segments and 30% of lakes that were sampled were deemed healthy. Elevated bacteria concentrations were the most-cited cause of impairment.

“We’re going to see fluctuations based on the climate, how much rainfall we’re getting, what the stream levels are,” said Noah Poppelreiter, water monitoring supervisor for the DNR.

He declined to speculate about water quality trends in the state but said the department has worked to increase its monitoring in recent years.

It assessed more than 1,400 segments for the latest report, which is a little more than half of the total segments identified by the state.

The 387 segments deemed “healthy” by the DNR are mostly composed of waters that meet some quality standards but lack sufficient data to determine that all the standards are met.

Only 24 water body segments had proof they met all the standards, up from 15 in the last report two years ago.

“That’s an abysmal number,” said David Cwiertny, director of the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination at the University of Iowa. “It shows we’ve got really severe water quality problems.”

The DNR noted 47 fish kills during the monitoring period. Animal waste, fertilizers and pesticides accounted for more than half of them. The causes of a third of the kills were unknown.
