NOH8 (No Hate) Campaign photo shoot  After Action Report

Civil Rights and Gender Equity Forums

PACG was happy to co-sponsor the NOH8 Campaign photo shoot to kick of Pride month in the Quad Cities. Over 80 people showed up to receive a NOH8 tattoo and have their picture taken as an act of solidarity for all those who feel hate in this world.

Participants will receive a link to their photos. The NOH8 campaign is a non-profit organization that promotes and raises awareness for marriage and human equality, as well as anti-discrimination and anti-bullying. Those from the national NOH8 (pictured below) were very pleased with the turnout.

A big "thank you!" to PACG co-founder, Cath Bolkcom, for the pictures of our friends. These are not the final images from the photo shoot.

For our local participants - we would LOVE to publish your final NOH8 image on our website and social media platforms. Please contact our Webmaster and Office Manager with your photos. Thanks for participating in this fun event.

Happy Pride Month everyone!

Here's some local news coverage of this upcoming event!

Show up "camera-ready" and wearing a white t-shirt. Here is the Facebook event link. For those of you not on Facebook, here is the post:

The first 200 people in line will get their pictures taken for free! After that, the cost is:
Single/Solo Photos: $40
Couple/Group Photos: $25 per person

NOH8 accepts cash and credit cards only. Fees paid to participate cover services and costs for one edited digital print only, made available via noh8campaign.com, and do not include physical prints.

* COME CAMERA-READY *
* WEAR A WHITE SHIRT *
* POSE & MAKE A STATEMENT! *

The NOH8 Campaign makes its way to Davenport, IA with the help of One Human family QCA on Thursday, June 1st. Stop by the Metropolitan Community Church of Iowa anytime between 6pm-8pm to pose for an official NOH8 photo by photographer Adam Bouska. No reservations or tickets needed!

Photos are first-come, first-served - and we move fast! Please arrive camera-ready with a plain white shirt to match the signature style of the NOH8 photos.

When is the best time to arrive? Most people tend to arrive before the photo shoot begins, but as long as someone has lined up by the advertised end time for the photo shoot (8:00pm for this photo shoot), they should be guaranteed a chance to pose!

Once you arrive, the next steps are easy!
1. Fill-out a numbered model release for each person.
2. Process your payment.
3. Trade your processed model release for duct tape (the duct tape is optional)
4. Apply a NOH8 temporary tattoo for your photo

NOH8 Co-Founder Adam Bouska will photograph roughly 5-10 frames per person. One frame will be selected/edited by our team and made available within approximately six weeks (timeline subject to change).

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING? E-mail [email protected] with your contact information and make sure to note which shoot you'd like to volunteer for!

Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for marriage and human equality as well as anti-discrimination and anti-bullying through NOH8’s interactive social media campaign. This includes bringing the campaign to other cities and countries around the world, creating and compiling images for our ongoing large-scale media campaign, and covering the costs of the daily operations and maintenance necessary to run this rapidly growing campaign out of our Burbank Headquarters.

The NOH8 Campaign is a tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Click here and scroll down to the 'Funds & Financing' portion of our FAQ for more information about how fees are utilized.

The REAL Mainstream has written a beautiful article explaining the history of the NOH8 campaign:

Thirteen years ago, theNoH8 campaign triggered worldwide headlines when the wife and daughter of Republican stalwart John McCain, Cindy and Megan, posed for photos that spoke out in support of gay marriage.

Back then, the purpose pf NoH8 was to speak out against Proposition 8, a proposed California law that would have outlawed gay marriage. This was before the U.S. Supreme Court declared marriage equality a constitutional right in 2015.

This year, after proposals to ban gay marriage once again were proposed in Iowa and other states, NoH8 remains relevant. And it’s coming to the Quad Cities June 1, with a photo shoot at MCC of the Quad Cities in Davenport.

To be part of the shoot, you just need to show up sometime between 6 and 8 p.m. June 1, “camera-ready” and wearing a white T-shirt. You can also bring a sign you created yourself, with your own message. Each shoot costs $25 to $40 depending on whether it’s a single shot or features a duo or group, and includes 5 to 10 shots — one of which will be chosen by you and the NoH8 team.

Since its founding in 2008, NoH8 has featured 56,000 people — including thousands of celebrities — in photos with duct tape covering their mouths and NoH8 written on one cheek. All photos are taken by founder Adam Bouska.

“It’s very important to have people looking into the camera, to connect and look in their eyes,” Bouska said in a 2010 interview with Autostraddle about NoH8. “The white t-shirts help the skin tones and the eyes stand out a bit more. I think the difference in skin tones says a lot because it applies in any respect where the majority votes on the rights of a minority.”

This event is the only one scheduled throughout Iowa. A NoH8 photo shoot is also scheduled in Chicago May 28, and in Minneapolis June 3.

Proceeds from the NoH8 campaign help fund the campaign’s ongoing efforts to advocate for “marriage and human equality as well as anti-discrimination and anti-bullying,” the group says. Volunteers are also needed for the event; if you’d like to help, email  [email protected]. MCC is located at 2930 W. Locust St., Davenport.
