After Action Report - Climate Crisis Parade

Climate Crisis Parade - After Action Report
Saturday, February 1st at 12:00 pm

Bold Iowa

On February 1st Bold Iowa, along with nearly 70 other organizations, marched in Des Moines to demonstrate the climate crisis. PACG was a co-sponsor of this event along with the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities (UUCQC).

Nearly a dozen members of the Quad Cities traveled with 100 Grannies from Iowa City to march alongside others. Speeches by young members of the Indigenous community launched the parade. The emphasis was to note the lack of coverage of this crisis by the local and national media.

Ironically, they once, again, failed to adequately cover the event. Nearly 1000 marched in the event, while the Des Moines Register mentioned only 400 marchers. See more photos below taken by Mike Wilcox, member of PACG, UUCQC, and President of the Eagle View Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Climate Crisis Parade - Saturday, February 1st in Des Moines

Climate Crisis Parade - Saturday, February 1st at 12:00 pm

Cowles Commons
221 Walnut Street, Des Moines, IA (map)

Bold Iowa

The Iowa Coalition is planning a major climate action before the Caucuses.

Please note: We need a firm number of attendees for the organization chartering the bus by January 3rd.

Over forty organizations have come together to take collective climate action on Saturday, February 1st at noon in Des Moines just before the Iowa Caucuses. If you are interested in attending this event, there will be a bus leaving from Iowa City, early that morning and returning later that same day. It will cost only $12 round trip. We are also considering a local caravan and carpool. Contact Lori McCollum if you are interested.

The Climate Crisis Parade is only two days before the Iowa Caucuses in order to challenge voters and the media to act with urgency on behalf of our climate. This event marks the first time these local, state, and national groups have worked together to spotlight the urgent need for all to act on climate. Participants will gather at Cowles Commons, 221 Walnut Street, in Des Moines and parade to the Iowa Events Center, where media from around the world will assemble to report on the Iowa Caucuses. The action is non-partisan and not organized in support of any presidential candidate. You can learn more about the event by contacting the Steering Committee at communications@climatemarch.org.

Contacts are Samantha Kuhn at 847-682-2924 and Steve Shivvers at 515-468-3923.

UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
December 2nd thru December 13th

Madrid, Spain

Environmental Forum

The 25th Conference of the Parties, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will occur from December 2nd-13th in Madrid, Spain. At the COP25 the international community will attempt to accelerate actions to reverse climate change. Call your members of Congress and ask why we are withdrawing from this agreement at this critical time. Nations are supposed to submit new climate action plans in 2020. We must reduce emissions 45% by 2030 and reach climate neutrality by 2050 to stabilize the global temperature by the end of the century. Let Congress know that you are a Climate Crisis Voter!

Contact information for your Iowa and Illinois representatives is always available on the PACG website! Call or email today!

  • Ensure a Fair & Just Transition led by impacted workers and communities, including low income and communities of color, without relying on corporate schemes or market-based mechanisms.

Cedar Rapids Citizens Climate Lobby Meeting

Linn County Citizens Climate Lobby Meeting

The PACG Environmental Forum continues to educate Americans about the growing dangers of climate change and the many climate solutions that work, and members continue to take action to demonstrate leadership in environmental sustainability. Climate change is as urgent as ever. The Fourth National Climate Assessment released on Friday, and the IPCC report on limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees Celsius released October 8, underscore the urgent need for action. Recent climate-related disasters like the wildfire in Paradise, California, and Hurricanes Florence and Michael, show the very real dangers to real people and property in the United States. The Fourth National Climate Assessment outlines growing damage from climate change to the economy including agriculture, infrastructure, health, and water. For more details, visit: nca2018.globalchange.gov/.

The Cedar Rapids Citizens Climate Lobby Meeting is Saturday, December 8th in the second-floor technology classroom at the public library, 450 5th Avenue SE, in downtown Cedar Rapids. This is an organizational meeting to discuss plans for 2019. It will be followed by the national Citizens Climate Lobby monthly conference call.
For more details, and to share with your friends, here is an event page: facebook.com/events/267597140614174/

Please join us for this worthwhile event!

The 2020 U.S. Senate  elections are coming – There are 21 majority incumbent U.S. Senators up for re-election in 2020 who, in my opinion, have not only failed to take any positive action to address climate change, but have stood by while Trump has withdrawn the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement and done other damage to our country. It is essential that we have Senators who take positive action to address climate change before the 2020 elections. Climate change should not be a partisan issue!
