7/31/2008

Register now for Earth Charter Summit/PACG's Fall event for this year October 11

PACG encourages everyone to attend the 2008 Earth Charter Summit being presented by the Congregation of the Humility of Mary of Davenport with PACG serving as a partner presentor.  Our own Cathy Bolkcom, one of the founders of PACG, will give an address on social and economic justice and  how these issues and war affect our planet...mark you calendars now and get registered early.  "No Impact Man," a nationally known environmentalist will be here!!

July 2008

You are invited!

2008 has been named the United Nations' Yea r of Planet Earth – an appropriate time to emphasize the Earth Charter's role in addressing climate change and its effects. Join us for a day of exploring facts and possibilities. Generate hope for the future and energy to make a difference at the Quad City Earth Charter Summit.

The QC Earth Charter Summit will be held on October 11, 2008 at the RiverCenter in downtown Davenport, Iowa, from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. In addition to presentations and displays by local groups and individuals, we are privileged and excited to be featuring from New York City, " No Impact Man" aka Colin Beavan (visit his blog at www.noimpact.com) and from the University of Iowa, renowned environmentalist Professor Jerald Schnoor. Cost is just $20 per person and includes lunch. Seating is limited so early registration is suggested.

Plan to attend! Additional details about the summit and participants can be found at www.qcearthcharter.org where registration brochures can be downloaded. It's easy to register - simply fill out the form in the brochure and mail. Please consider forwarding this information to your contact lists and include the summit in your organization's calendar of events. We are conserving paper by sending this to you electronically! I will also be happy to mail brochures per request.

The Earth Charter is an international agreement incorporating the following principles: respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice and a culture of peace. It seeks to inspire a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well being of the human family and the larger living world and is not aligned with or owned by a particular political party, religion or socio-economic group. The major consideration is quality of life for all.

The Summit is presented by the Congregation of the Humility of Mary whose mission statement reads, "We commit ourselves to work for justice within the human family and to care for the earth itself."

Thank you for your consideration and I hope to see you at the summit on October 11th. Feel free to call or email if you have questions.

PACG History - Peace Rallies

Rallies to oppose the Occupation of Iraq
Thursday and Saturday this week

To All of You Great Folks Who Have Stood Up For Peace in the Past:

Please come join us on Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 pm by Texas Roadhouse on 53rd Street and Corporate Drive in Davenport or on Saturday from 11am to noon on John Deere Rd. and 16th Street in Moline.  Come for the whole hour or just part of the hour, but please try to join us.  Our numbers are down, and we still need to stand up to call for an end to the Occupation in Iraq.

Both Presidential candidates are calling for leaving residual troops even though the Iraqi Government and people want us out so they can manage their own affairs.  We need to show Quad Citians that we are strong in our beliefs and in our numbers.  So hope to see you very soon!

Thanks For All You Do!

A message to PACG Young Leaders regarding the Peace Forum vigils

Hello Young Leaders!

I hope you are enjoying your summer. We need to meet again before school starts... scheduling is often a challenge as you know, so please let me know what days and times are good for YOU and then we will move forward.

There is so much going on right now... lots of information and ideas to share with you all... We are looking forward to getting your feedback.

Meanwhile, if you are free from 4:30-5:30pm on Thursdays (including today) and Saturdays from 11am to noon, and you would like to join our Peace Vigils, you would be most welcome! It's actually a wonderful way to spend an hour out of your day -- always fun and yet very meaningful. We get lots of honks from passersby!

Thursday Peace Vigil
Corner of E 53rd St and Corporate Row Dr in Davenport
(in front of Texas Roadhouse restaurant)
4:30-5:30pm

Saturday Peace Vigil
Corner of John Deere Rd and 16th St in Moline
(in front of Best Buy)
11am - Noon

In addition, the PACG Peace forum is planning a large event in September... the next planning meeting for that event is Tuesday, July 29th, 6:30pm at the Unitarian church. It would be great to have our Young Leaders involved in this initiative also! Contact Cathy Bolkcom for more information or just go to the meeting.

Well, that's all for now... I will look forward to receiving your feedback.

Peace Out,
caroline

Social Justice Movie Night - God Grew Tired of Us

Free popcorn and lemonade always served!

http://www.qcprogressiveaction.org/

After raising themselves in the desert along with thousands of other parentless "lost boys," Sudanese refugees John, Daniel and Panther have found their way to America, where they experience electricity, running water and supermarkets for the first time. Capturing their wonder at things Westerners take for granted, this documentary, an award winner at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, paints an intimate portrait of strangers in a strange land.

Bring a friend or family member! Hope to see you there!

Discussion following the movie.

PACG Peace Forum Meeting
Tuesday, July 8, 6:30 PM

Davenport Unitarian Church
3707 Eastern Ave
Davenport, IA

PACG Peace Forum

After a great first planning meeting last week, we will meet again to discuss plans for a peace event in September, probably at a park where we will hope to do inner peace work with Cambodain monk Somnieng. We want to make the connection between the war outside and peace within.  Gearge Rashid has a great idea about church bells of local churches.  Maybe we will also do another boot display.

We will also be talking more about the economic, human and moral costs of the war.  Come and help us plan.

Thanks, Cathy Bolkcom

New PACG organizer - PACG History

New PACG organizer as Caroline leaves (and our new email address!)

Dear Progressive Family,

This past Monday, June 30th, was my official last day as organizer (paid staff) for Progressive Action for the Common Good. I want to thank all of you for the opportunity to work for this great organization. It has been an incredible honor and a privilege, and I am grateful beyond words (if you can imagine that) :-).

Of course, I will still be involved as a volunteer and hope to take more of a leadership role in the Corporate Reform forum (I will be calling on you all in the future).

Last Thursday, during our PACG Community meeting, James and many others surprised me with a wonderful cake, a ballon bouquet, and a beautiful award of appreciation for 3 years as your organizer. THANK YOU SO MUCH PACG!!!

At this time I want to reiterate the need for all of us to help James as much as possible. We are still working on our fund drive... it is essential to the organization that we have your financial support as well as some of your time to further all of our important initiatives around the various issues that affect our lives as we continue to educate the community and encourage involvement.

Please commit to volunteering a little more of your time and yes,  your resources to PACG. Campaigns come and go, but we are here for the long term, and without citizen groups like PACG, our elected leadership will not reflect our values. It is up to us to ensure that they do.

We will not be able to hire another organizer until we finish the fund drive so you can see how important it is that we do so. For the time being, I will still answer the PACG cell phone and continue to help send out email messages, etc., but we will need volunteers to take over some of my duties to lesson the work load on James. Please contact James or I to find out how you can help.

Henceforth, you will no longer receive the PACG email messages from my carolina1961@gmail address... as you can see we have created a new email address for this purpose ([email protected]).

Thank you PACG - for all that you do!
Peace and Love,
Caroline
