Changes to our Progressive Action Update

A Message to Our Members

In the spring of 2022, PACG made significant changes to our weekly email. We renamed it the Progressive Action Update (PAU), changed the formatting, added new sections, and tried to streamline it for easier reading. We try to have less information inside the email by including links to our actions, events and information. Most of those links go to our website.

We have been carrying this information at the bottom of our PAU and have now decided that our readership knows this information. Even though we continue to use this heading coding, you will no longer see this explanation at the bottom of the email. Instead, the email will link to this blog post.

Although we schedule the our weekly Progressive Action Update (PAU) email for Tuesday morning delivery, submissions to the it are due by noon on the Sunday before publication.

We are always interested in your suggestions or ideas regarding our communications with you. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

A Message to Our Membership - Regarding WEU Editing

A Message from the WEU Editors

The Communications Committee of PACG has been busy writing up "Policies and Procedures" documents for our organization. One of the documents that has been written recently regards the Weekly Email Update (WEU) editing process.

The following statement has been added to the Make a Submission to our Weekly Email Update (WEU) page of our website:

An Important Note from the WEU Editors: The Weekly Email Update (WEU) has established a reputation as an important means of communication about progressive issues in our communities. As editors, we are responsible for the clarity of all submissions. We reserve the right to edit any submitter's post for typos, grammar and clarity, and to supplement with informational links. These minor changes do not require permission from the submitter. Approval from the submitter is only required if an editor believes that a substantial change would improve the content of the post. When we make corrections, we improve the image of our organization and of the submitter. We all want to be seen in the best light, and our editing accomplishes this.

You will see this message the next time that you submit something for us to share with our community in the WEU. We have actually been making minor edits to your submissions for many years. But since this is now in writing, we wanted to share that fact with you.

Thank you for your continued support of PACG, our Weekly Email Update (WEU) and our website. We are proud that we are able to share information about progressive issues, and the good work our friends are doing, in a timely manner.

Introducing the "No Hate In Our States" Section in Our WEU

No Hate In Our States -
A Recent Addition to the PACG Weekly Email Update

A Message From Our President

Dear Progressives,

I am sure you have been as disheartened as I have over the murder of George Floyd, but I hope you have also found hope in the powerful resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement. PACG wholeheartedly supports this movement as well as all efforts for advancing racial justice in our communities and our country.

In response, demonstrating the importance of these efforts, our newsletter will begin each week with a new "No Hate in Our States" section, which will provide information on how you can get involved in supporting Black Lives Matter as well as justice and equality for all. In addition, links to more suggested actions for advancing these efforts will appear in this section.

Let's stand in solidarity with our diverse brothers and sisters in advancing justice!

Your President,

Allison

PACG Needs Your Support!

PACG Needs Your Support!

This has been a busy year for progressives and everyone else resisting the drastic shift away from our traditional American values of equality, fairness, concern for our environment and taking care of the most vulnerable in our society. Throughout it all Progressive Action for the Common Good (PACG) continues to be a unique and respected force leading the resistance and promoting progressive principles.

We have four very active Issue Forums: Civil Rights, Environmental, Health Care Reform and our newest Issue Forum on Drug Policy. We started a PACG Book Club which right now is reading books with a racial justice theme. Check our  website pacgqc.org for information on our many activities and events and to contact the leaders (facilitators) of any of our Issue Forums. Contact me if you want to start a new Issue Forum.

A great way to keep up is to sign up for our Weekly Email Update. You will need to respond to a confirmation email. Those of you on Facebook should like our Progressive Action for the Common Good page and join the PACG Facebook group of the Book Club or any Issue Forum that interests you.

Another way to help is to become a paying member. An individual membership is $10 and family membership is $20. Those who can afford to give more are encouraged to do so. We especially appreciate those who give monthly. You can donate through our pacgqc.org website or send a check to:

    PACG
    1212 W 3rd St, Suite 3D
    Davenport, IA 52802

PACG is a 501(c) 3 organization, and donations are tax-deductible as charitable contributions to the extent allowed by law.

We have a new part time office manager and organizer, Amber Bordolo. She will support the efforts of our many volunteers, whether they serve on an Issue Forum or the Board. Amber will also help us utilize social media more effectively. You will meet her soon!

Resistance is hard work and must be on-going. The only way to succeed is by uniting with other progressive individuals and organizations. We couldn’t do it without you!

On Thursday, 1/20 the Scott County Board of Supervisors received public input on whether or not, once again, to be part of the Master Matrix discussion.

The Board has chosen in the past, since 2004, to allow Scott County citizens to have part in the Master Matrix decision that is forwarded to the IOWA Department of Natural Resources.

HEALTH CARE BRIEFS ON THE NEW LAW:
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?  AND FOR OTHERS?

Covering the Uninsured.  The new Health Care Affordability Act will extend health insurance coverage to 32 million Americans that now have no coverage.  These fellow citizens now suffer, and often die prematurely without adequate health care.  They also often end up in the emergency room where they must be treated, at excessive cost, with bills they cannot pay.  This drives up insurance costs and taxpayer expenses for the rest of us. Don't let opponents of health care reform, take this sensible and humanitarian coverage away.
--from Faithful Reform in Health Care (www.faithfulreform.org)

These brief summaries of benefits in the new health care law were prepared by Progressive Action for the Common Good of the Quad Cities,  based on research by Faithful Reform in Health Care which represents many churches and other faith communities. (See the list of members on their website.)  Faithful Reform seeks to speak the "whole truth" about health care issues instead of the many half truths that abound.  If you, or someone you know, has had a personal experience with this or another benefit of the new law, please share it with  the Health Care Reform Forum of PACG (karencadfael@aol.com).

ACTION ALERTS

DREAM Act Comes Before Congress Today
The DREAM Act is scheduled to come before both the House and Senate for a vote later today.

Go to www.iowaimmigrationeducation.org  to learn more.

Please call your representatives in support of this important legislation.

Economic Impact of the DREAM Act
This week, the Development, Relief and Education, for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act) will be introduced in both houses of Congress.  Among the most contentious issues during the lame duck session, the DREAM Act is actually very simple.  It is a bipartisan bill that would legalize persons who were brought to the U.S. before the age of 16 and who have been here for a minimum of five years.  To obtain a legal status and eventually become permanent residents and later citizens, they must graduate from a U.S. high school and then complete two years of higher education or serve for two years in the U.S. military.  They would be required to pass background, criminal, and health checks that are required for all immigrants and  "wait in line" for 10 years before obtaining permanent legal residence.  The law would not legalize their parents.

According to a 2010 report by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), 2.1 million people would currently be eligible to participate.  Of these, MPI estimates that roughly 38 percent (about 825,000 people) would take advantage of the program.
Among the many benefits of the DREAM Act, the three most compelling are: (1) a bigger tax base for state and federal programs, (2) more educated and skilled workers, and (3) new recruits for military service.
The DREAM Act would provide not only an economic and defense boost, but also an opportunity for unauthorized youth to contribute to our communities in a way that is currently impossible. Youth who are afraid of their status being discovered hesitate to volunteer or be involved in community or school programs.  They may be among the best and brightest, but have no incentive to continue their education because they have no future in the only home many of them have ever known and no future in the country in which they were born.
The DREAM Act does not provide in-state tuition or any financial support to students. It would make them eligible for federal student loans or work-study programs, but not for tuition assistance such as Pell Grants.  It would not decrease the cost of higher education for a DREAM Act student below what other students pay.
To find out more about the DREAM Act, please visit our website: www.iowaimmigrationeducation.org.
