Rooting Out Poverty Book Club

The Gender Equity Forum and the PACG Book Club are excited to invite you to a panel discussion on becoming an ally to the LGBTQI+ community. The panel arose from Project Now's Rooting Out Poverty book club's discussion of the book The Savvy Ally in March. You don't need to read the book to benefit from the panel discussion.

Iowa Reproductive Freedom Alert

PACG cannot, and does not, ever endorse a particular candidate for office or ask people to vote for a certain political party. However, there are currently bills in the Iowa legislature that we are very concerned about regarding reproductive freedom.

Get a preview from House Democratic Leader Rep. Jennifer Konfrst of our newest legislation to protect reproductive freedom for Iowans:

When we started session in January we made a promise to listen to Iowans and then focus on the issues important to them.

In the next week, we'll be releasing our plan for reproductive freedom that will give everyone the right to make their own health care decisions, especially when it comes to reproductive care and abortion.

We believe lawmakers have no place interfering in someone else’s decisions about when to start a family. We believe that private health care decisions belong between an individual, their family, and their doctor.

Please stay tuned!

And learn more about the bills circulating by GOP lawmakers that could restrict access to reproductive care.

The Gender Equity forum invites you to a Lobby Day in Des Moines on Tuesday, March 21st hosted by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa and the Iowa Abortion Access Fund. Although the abortion bans did not make it through the “funnel” in the legislature this year, anti-trans bills are moving forward and also need to be opposed.

If you are on Facebook, you can sign up here. The event is free but they ask that you get a ticket to register.

If you are not on Facebook, contact me and I'll register for you.

I'm going! Hope you can join me!

We have decided to do something similar to what our friends in the PACG Environmental Forum have been successfully sponsoring for many years. They offer a monthly educational meeting called Green Drinks.

Hands Off! Happy Hour will meet in-person monthly to discuss how we can more effectively coordinate our action groups to create educational actions and events that meet our purpose. We hope to alternate venues on either side of the river.

Please join us on February 21st at 5:00 pm for noshing and strategizing.

LGBTQ+ Prayer Vigil - What You Can Do Now

Prayer Vigil for our LGBTQ+ Neighbors
Friday, February 10th at 6:30 pm

Metropolitan Community Church of the Quad Cities
2930 W Locust ST
Davenport, IA 52804 (map)

One Human Family - QCA

Here is a link to an article in Saturday, February 4th's QC Times about how the Davenport police foiled a plot to violently attack the QCA’s LGBTQ+ community. The threat of a mass shooting event has come to our town! There is no underestimating the seriousness of this threat!

This is a time when we need to stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ neighbors. One way is by attending a Prayer Vigil that will be held next Friday (February 10th) at the Metropolitan Community Church, starting at 6:30 p.m. Since the Prayer Vigil has been scheduled at the same time as the Jewish community’s weekly Shabbat evening service, unfortunately, many from the Jewish community will be unable to attend. Please do not take the absence of Jews at the Prayer Vigil to mean that the Jewish community does not care about this issue. The Jews of the Quad Cities stand in firm solidarity with our LGBTQ+ neighbors.

Confronting the “Elite Capture” of Identity Politics in Our Movement Spaces

Truthout

The Truthout mission statement includes: Truthout is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to providing independent reporting and commentary on a diverse range of social justice issues. Kelly Hayes is the host of the Truthout podcast, Movement Memos, which she describes as: a Truthout podcast about solidarity, organizing and the work of making change.

From the podcast website:

"We have to be politically serious about how much agreement and how much alignment we’re going to require in a world of a resurging far-right fascist movement across the globe,” says philosopher and author Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò.

In this episode of “Movement Memos,” Táíwò and host Kelly Hayes discuss the lessons of Táíwò’s book, Elite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else).
