A Message from the Board

Join us at the German American Heritage Center for a meal and help us celebrate another year of PACG's activism!

Although this event is free, we need you to register here.

The main course will be catered. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

We also ask that, if possible, you bring your own dishware, silverware and reusable napkin. This follows our PACG environmental principle of sustainability.

We will present the annual Dick Fallow Social Justice Grant Award to a worthy, local recipient.

Optional Holiday Gift: Every year we also ask for gently used books for the library for Cobblestone residents, either adult or children's books. They do not need to be wrapped.

A Message from the Board

As we approach the one-year mark of being in pandemic mode, we would like to acknowledge the activities of Operation Reach Out, a PACG initiative.

PACG realized early the serious nature of the pandemic and recognized that it could be a long haul before our lives would be back to normal. Thus, we had the foresight to experiment with Zoom as a way to continue the work that we do, enabling people to interact face-to-face, albeit virtually.

In addition, knowing how important connection with others is and that this connection could be seriously compromised during a pandemic, we decided to Reach Out to members who might be feeling particularly isolated. We purchased tablets for members who were willing to learn the new Zoom technology. Responses from some of these members have been amazingly positive!

We also called those we felt might be especially isolated to offer support and learn what needs they may have. These members also received gift bags for the winter holidays and, most recently, may be surprised to find Girl Scout cookies delivered to their door steps!

We are proud that volunteers took on this initiative in the name of looking out for the common good of others who have been negatively impacted by the pandemic. And we encourage our progressive counterparts in the community to do the same. The Reach Out initiative epitomizes what PACG is all out! Many thanks to those who have made Operation Reach Out a success!

The US has held elections even during times of great strife like the Civil War, the Great Depression and both World Wars. The peaceful transfer of power has never been in question.

The efforts of our forebears gave African Americans and women the right to vote. Today Americans agree that every citizen should vote and that every vote should be counted.

PACG is working with local groups and clergy to organize a rally and prayer vigil on Saturday, November 7th at 1:00 pm. We will meet at the Stone Fountain on the south side of Vander Veer Park.

We support the dedication and efforts of our local election officials to ensure that every vote is counted. Join us for this peaceful rally and prayer vigil to bring people together in support of the values and ideals we share as participants in our democracy.

15 Years - Y15K - $15,000

Donate to Y15K

Please help us celebrate our 15th Anniversary by supporting our Y15K fundraiser! Our goal is to raise $7,500 from donors, matched with PACG funds on hand, for a total of $15,000. We will donate the $15,000 raised to nonprofits in the community serving those in need. We especially want to help those negatively impacted by COVID-19.

Our funds will benefit:

The residents of Cobblestone Place which provides low-income housing;
Immigrants negatively impacted by COVID-19 through Quad Cities Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees (QCAIR);
Families experiencing hunger due to job losses through Heart of Hope;
Immigrants (and others) by providing food service job training and commercial kitchen support through Catalyst Kitchen.

To help you learn more, we are hosting Understand the Need Zoom webinars where representatives from each group will explain how they function to benefit our community and why they are in additional need today.

A Message from the Board

Progressive Action for the Common Good (PACG) is celebrating 15 years of working tirelessly for liberty and justice in the Quad Cities! We organized out of the belief that bringing progressives together on the issues that matter to them is important for democracy to succeed. Your support has allowed us to defend and advance progressive causes. In celebration of our 15th Anniversary, we would like to give back to our community and, in particular, to those who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to announce the Y15K (15 years/$15,000) initiative. We will match donations to PACG in the hopes of raising at least $7,500 from members so that we can infuse $15,000 into our community. These donations will be threefold:

to Cobblestone Place to help meet residents’ needs;
directly to immigrants who have been affected by COVID-19 (with the help of Quad Cities Alliance for Immigrants and Refugees - QCAIR);
to local non-profits that serve populations of interest to our Issue Forums.

You are someone who has supported PACG in the past. We ask you to consider donating to our Y15K initiative. Remember that PACG is a 501(c)(3) organization and your donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

We are hosting Zoom presentations so that members can learn more about who we will support with Y15K. I hope you can join us! Please see the flyer for more information about this fund drive and our presentations. Thank you for your continued support for progressive issues and for PACG.

We continue to receive WEU submissions and Facebook posts regarding novel coronavirus PPE (personal protective equipment), such as making masks. We feel that it is not our place to post these items. Pandemic prevention, treatment and protection fall into areas outside the scope of the issues our forums are working on. We are not qualified to evaluate the safety of one mask over another, nor should we make medical recommendations of this nature, as there is liability in the sharing of misleading or incorrect information. In addition, there are plenty of resources available elsewhere for our members. However, we will share pandemic information that is relevant to our community because of an issue one of our forums is working on. Thank you for understanding this policy.

Coronavirus Update as of March 30th

A Message from the PACG Board of Directors

According to the CDC, both Illinois and Iowa are now experiencing widespread community transmission of the coronavirus. This pandemic is not to be taken lightly. There are obviously more cases in the community that have not yet been diagnosed. Our elderly members and those with chronic health conditions need to be especially careful - and everyone else needs to help protect those individuals.

The best advice is to follow the guidance of our local and state health departments: Scott County Health Department, Rock Island County Health Department, Iowa Department of Public Health, and Illinois Department of Public Health.

According to the CDC, all gatherings should be cancelled. The Trump Administration said on March 29th that the social distancing guidelines will now be in place through April 30th; however, neither the CDC website nor WhiteHouse.gov have been updated to reflect this extension.

All PACG events have been postponed or cancelled. Our regular meetings and other small gatherings will be held online using Zoom. PACG has purchased sufficient Zoom licenses for our leaders to schedule meetings. Our Office Manager, Julie Ross, can set up Zoom meetings on behalf of other members or affiliates. Contact her via pacgoffice@gmail.com, her cell (563-508-2209) or the PACG Office (563-676-7580).

People can join a Zoom meeting using a phone, tablet or computer. This service is free to the meeting participants. Zoom is a user-friendly tool and we are in the process of training our activists in its use (please be patient as we make this transition). We believe online meetings will enable us to keep up our good work through this difficult time. Just as important, for those who must self-quarantine, it will keep them connected with their fellow activists. And even after the pandemic restrictions end, we believe this will be a useful tool for holding at least some meetings in the future (think snow storms and other inclement weather).

We will use our website and calendar to give you Zoom links for meetings and online events.

A Message to Our Membership Regarding COVID-19

I have been keeping a close eye on the development of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States. I had an early personal interest since my son and his Chinese citizen wife were planning a Chinese marriage ceremony in Nanjing, China on March 1st. So I've been paying close attention since early January (needless-to-say, the wedding was postponed).

We are very fortunate in the Quad Cities that we are not experiencing widespread community transmission at this time. However, this pandemic is not to be taken lightly. Our elderly members and those with chronic health conditions need to be especially careful - and everyone else needs to help protect those individuals. The best advice is to follow the guidance of our local and state health departments: Scott County Health Department, Rock Island County Health Department, Iowa Department of Public Health, and Illinois Department of Public Health.

Large PACG events may have to be postponed or cancelled. Although right now the recommendation is to not have events with more than 50 people for the next 8 weeks (per the CDC as of 3/16/20 at 1100 am), these guidelines will change over time. PACG will be following the advice of public health officials. We will use our website and calendar to give you the most up-to-date information about cancellations. Please begin checking those before attending any previously scheduled meeting or event mentioned in our Weekly Email Update (WEU).
