PACG History - Health Care Reform Forum in December, 2012 Karen Metcalf Tue, Dec 18, 2012
Members of the PACG Health Care Reform Forum had another busy year in 2012. The Affordable Care Act, now officially known as "Obamacare," was upheld as the law of the land by the Supreme Court, and ratified in public opinion in the November election results. Of course we celebrated, but not for long, because we had too much to do. We educated the public locally, primarily in houses of worship, about the provisions of the law in the context of a perspective of faith. We also advocated with local legislators about the two key implementation issues that need state legislative action, the Medicaid expansion and the development of the insurance exchange. We will continue this work in 2013, the last year to prepare for the key implementation deadline of 2014. Now that people know that health care reform is here to stay, we expect many more will want to understand how it will affect them, and we'll be doing our part to help. We're excited about our challenges and opportunities in the new year! SOCIAL SECURITYModerators: Caryn Unsicker / Dick Fallow
The Social Security Forum has hosted events at the Davenport and Moline libraries, respectively, the past two years to educate the public about the facts that Social Security, by law, is not part of the federal deficit, and will be solvent through the end of this century if we just raise or eliminate the cap on taxed earnings. Speakers from the Alliance for Retired Americans gave the presentations and disseminated literature. Please contact Caryn Unsicker ([email protected]) or Carol Brown ([email protected]) if you would like information or literature about Social Security. Inauguration Ball - January 21, 2013 |
