Don’t Be Railroaded!
What does the merger of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern railroads mean to the Quad Cities?

FACTS:
  • Up to 22 trains with an average of 8,000 ft or 1.5 miles long will be traveling through the QC daily. A 10 min. wait at the crossing can become a 40 min. wait.
  • These trains will transport tank cars from Canada to Mexico. Each car will carry 30,000 gallons of flammable crude oil.
  • Estimate a minimum of 2.5 hr. of train traffic a day. The train runs 24 hr. a day.

IMPACT OF THE INCREASED TRAIN TRAFFIC:
  • Risk of accidents and derailment will increase according. There had been several accidents and derailments of CP trains since 2019.
  • Due to the long train, emergency vehicles may not be able to reach residents and businesses located south of the track.
  • Noise pollution, vibration, traffic, the increase in air pollution can impact property value and economic development of the river front.

TAKE ACTION:
  • Attend the Davenport City Council meeting on Wed. Aug 10th at 5:30 pm at City Hall Council Chamber and voice your concerns. This topic is on the agenda.
  • If you’re unable to attend, contact your alderperson and express your opinion.
  • Write a letter to the editor of the Quad City Times and express your concerns.

July 2022 Environmental Celebration - What You Can Do Now

Plastic Free July - Monthly Environmental Celebration

Picture
Environmental Forum

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing global environmental issues.
About 40% of the plastic products ever made are now in our oceans, rivers and on the ground. Less than 6% of the plastic produced has been recycled, but we are expected to triple plastic production in the next 3 decades.

An average American household generates 250 pounds of plastic waste every year, most of which comes from packaging. Plastic pollution poses significant risk to all ecosystems during production and disposal. Microplastics have permeated our food and water, and are jeopardizing human health.

Join the global Plastic Free July movement and be part of the solution. Simple changes in your daily life can make a big difference. Say no to single-use plastics like bottled water, straws, shopping bags, and tableware. Find reusable alternatives. Purchase products packaged in boxes instead of plastic and reduce packaging waste by buying in bulk - it’s also less expensive! Bring your own container for leftovers when eating out. Recycle all of the plastic that you can. Make sure the items are clean and do anything else required by your recycling company.

Take Action Steps:
  • Log the amount of single-use plastic you declined during the month of July, and set a higher goal for next month. Keep track of your progress.
  • Go to https://www.plasticfreejuly.org and join the Plastic Free July challenge.
  • Learn about the global plastic crisis and share this video with your friends and family https://www.storyofstuff.org/movies/story-of-plastic-animation.
  • Write to companies and ask them to reduce packaging. Tell them you’ll only purchase from companies with sustainable business practices.
  • Contact your Members of Congress and ask them to support the “Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act” that was introduced in Congress last year. Support local recycling and plastic reduction policies.

June Environmental Celebration - World Bicycle Day

5/31/2022

June Environmental Celebration
World Bicycle Day – June 3rd

Picture
Environmental Forum

The United Nations designated June 3rd to be World Bicycle Day.

Why should we celebrate the bicycle?
  • Moderate activity like bicycling significantly benefits the physical and mental health of people of all ages.
  • Bicycling is an affordable mode of transportation, at the same time it reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses.
  • The World Health Organization considers cycling a pathway for achieving health equity.
  • Cycling is a sustainable alternative to driving; it reduces the use of fossil fuel as well as the emissions of hazardous air pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Bicycling Safety
  • Bicyclists must travel in the same direction as the traffic and ride as far to the right as possible. When possible, travel on designated bike lanes.
  • Watch out for cars backing out of the driveways when biking in a residential neighborhood.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Be visible, wear bright color clothing during daylight, and use light and reflective gear when riding at night.
  • Invest in a good helmet and wear it all the time when you bike.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing that can be caught up in the bicycle chain.

Take Action
  • Commit to leaving your car at home and biking at least one day a month.
  • Commit to making short distance trips on a bike instead of driving.

2022 Earth Day Fair - After Action Report

Saturday, May 7th

Environmental Forum

Nearly 25 exhibitors participated in the Earth Day Fair this year at the Freight House Farmers Market. The theme this year was “Invest in our Planet.”  With sponsorship from Living Lands and Waters and WVIK, we were able to offer activities and educational materials to several hundred Quad Citians.

We had over 30 organizations represented, including: Wapsi River Environmental Education Center, Wild Ones Quad Cities Chapter, Family Museum, Niabi Zoo, Nahant Marsh Education Center, Metrolink, River Action, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities, Audubon Society, Citizens Climate Lobby, and Quad City Botanical Center.

We also had 5 different musical groups perform throughout the day, and we all enjoyed the perfect spring weather! Thank you to our sponsors and the many organizations who participated. We also thank the many PACG members who came out to help set-up, break-down, and do general chaos control!

This annual tradition was coordinated by PACG’s Environmental Forum. We are grateful to have an effective and fun group of people in this group. We meet via Zoom on the first Monday of the month. Contact our forum if you would like a link to the meeting.

There are numerous pictures of the Earth Day Fair at the Market on our Environmental Forum Facebook page here.

May Environmental Celebration - What You Can Do Now

International Compost Awareness Week – May 1st to 7th
May Environmental Celebration

Picture
Environmental Forum

The first full week of May is International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW).

Why is composting important?
• One third of our garbage is food and yard waste; composting saves landfill space.
• In the landfill, organic waste decomposes releasing methane gas, which is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Composting reduces methane emission in a landfill.
• Compost improves water retention of the soil, which helps reduce the risk of  erosion and runoff; it also provides more moisture for the plants.
• Compost enriches the soil with essential nutrients like nitrogen, potassium  and phosphorous. Healthier plants are more resistant to stresses like diseases and pests, reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

How to compost?
• Yard waste alone can be left in a bin or a pile to decompose by itself.
• Organic waste that contains food scrap and yard waste can be mixed with  some soil and water; it will be decomposed by microbes in 3-4 months.
• Redworms can help with composting; they eat organic wastes and release  their nitrogen rich castings. This can be done in a container indoor.
• For more information on what to compost and how to compost at home, visit https://www.epa.gov/recycle/composting-home
