Reasons to VOTE! Early

10/28/2018

Reasons to VOTE! Early

You should VOTE! before Election Day (Nov 6). Here are a list of reasons for early voting that may be effective in convincing people to early VOTE!:
  1. It is Iowa/Illinois. The weather may be terrible on Election Day.
  2. People get sick or family members get sick, which might happen on Election Day.
  3. Something could come up at work and you might not be able to get away in time on Election Day.
  4. There may be a large turn out on Election Day. Someone who doesn't have time to wait in line may decide not to vote. Take yourself out of the line so that others have an easier time voting.
  5. It will also save you time to VOTE! early, since lines in the Quad Cities for satellite voting are minimal to nonexistent.
  6. Your party or candidate has to call you or knock on your door in order to convince you to VOTE! Once you VOTE!, you are removed from the list of people they need to turn out on Election Day and they can concentrate on less reliable voters.
  7. Those who procrastinate may have trouble finding their polling place or finding parking or might arrive too late to VOTE! on Election Day.
  8. Can you think of other reasons? Leave a comment below if you have one to add!

One Human Family of the Quad Cities Area

"The One Human Family of the Quad Cities Area promotes diversity and inclusion in the Quad Cities area.

Our mission is to welcome and protect the life, dignity, and human rights of all people in all places in our community."

Here are some upcoming events:

Friday, Oct. 26th – 5:30-7:30 p.m. – FUNDRAISER FOR MT. PLEASANT FAMILIES – Sports Lounge of Modern Woodman Stadium (map) – No fee, but donations will be solicited.  Thanks to KEN CROKEN!

*     *     *

Tuesday, Oct. 30th – 4:00 p.m. – SYMPOSIUM PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING – Temple Emanuel (map)

*     *     *

Thursday, Nov. 8th – 7:30 a.m. – QUAD CITIES INTERFAITH FUNDRAISING BREAKFAST – St. Ambrose Rogalski Center (map) – It's not too late to sign up to sit at the One Human Family table.  No fee, but donations will be solicited.

*     *     *

Thursday, Nov 8th - 4:00 p.m. – COMMUNITY EDUCATION & AWARENESS TASK FORCE MEETING – Temple Emanuel (map)

*     *     *

Sunday, Nov. 11 – 4:00 p.m. – CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE TRAINING – Metropolitan Community Church, 2930 W. Locust St., Davenport (map)

This training is very important!  If you have not yet gone through one of our sessions, and you think that you might wish to participate in acts of peaceful civil disobedience, you really need to go through the training.  With the administration considering redefining Transgender out of existence and the approach of the Immigrant Caravan, we may soon find ourselves needing to engage in acts of peaceful civil disobedience, should the government remain unresponsive to our protests.

*     *     *

Wed., Nov. 14 – 12:00 – IN FROM THE COLD MAYORS’ HUNGER LUNCHEON – Golden Leaf Convention Center, 2902 E. Kimberly Rd., Davenport (map)

Not too late to sign up for a seat at the
One Human Family tables.  We have 2 tables, with 1 seat available, but if enough people sign up, we can order a 3rd table.  To sign up, respond to this email. – Fee of $35.00 with checks to be made out to IN FROM THE COLD.  You can send your check to me @ 3415 Eastern Ave., Davenport, 52807 or bring it to the luncheon.

6th Annual PACG Picnic and Pie Auction - After Action Report

10/22/2018

Our 6th Annual Picnic was a Success!

Over fifty people came out on Sunday, September 16th from noon to 3 pm at Fejervary Park in Davenport to relax and have fun at the 6th Annual PACG Picnic & Pie Auction.  This year, the weather was beautiful, the food and music were great, as usual, and we had a live auctioneer for our pie auction, which made it even more fun and successful!  Afterwards, a few of us even shared the delicious pies we had won!

There were brief reports from the Fallow Fund and the active Forums and even a healthcare version of "Blowin' in the Wind" accompanied by Doug McCullom.

Thanks so much to those of you who donated pies and who continue to support the important work of PACG in so many ways!  Thanks, too, to the picnic committee who worked hard to put the whole thing together, and to all the volunteers who helped set up and clean up. To those who couldn't make it this year, we missed you, and we hope you can join us for picnic fun next year!

Susan, Ann, Allison, Margie, Caryn

Book Club News for October, November and December 2018

October 23 (Tuesday) at 5:30 pm: International Women Authors Series with Mexican Author Valeria Luiselli

In my other book club I have very much enjoyed the Annual International Women Authors series. Consider attending the 12th Annual International Women Authors Series dinner on Tuesday, October 23, 5:30 pm with Mexican author Valeria Luiselli. The dinner is at the Radisson in downtown Davenport. The cost is $40 (less if you fill a whole table). You must register in advance, and they could sell out. Her books are short and you could probably get some of them read by October 23. Also, she wrote Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions, a book of essays interviewing children fleeing violence in Central America that is very pertinent to the work we are doing on Immigration in the Civil Rights Forum.

November 10 (Saturday) at 11:30 am: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Read more about it at the author’s website. There is also a movie based on the book, so PACG will go to the movie as well (on a different date). Check back later for the location.

December 1 (Saturday) at 11:30 am: The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

Read more about it at the NewJimCrow.com website. We will be reading this with the folks in PACG’s new Issue Forum on Drug Policy. (Join the Drug Policy Facebook group or visit the Drug Policy section of our pacgqc.org website to get involved.) Check back later for the location.
