Book Club

We have decided to meet in person in November and go back to Zoom for the winter months. We will skip December since it is too close to the holidays.

Our November book will be This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel. We will meet on Monday, November 21st at 4:30 pm at the Fairmount Street branch of the Davenport Public Library.

Here is some information about the book from Goodreads:

This is how a family keeps a secret…and how that secret ends up keeping them.

This is how a family lives happily ever after…until happily ever after becomes complicated.

This is how children change…and then change the world.

This is Claude. He’s five years old, the youngest of five brothers, and loves peanut butter sandwiches. He also loves wearing a dress, and dreams of being a princess.

When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl.

Rosie and Penn want Claude to be whoever Claude wants to be. They’re just not sure they’re ready to share that with the world. Soon the entire family is keeping Claude’s secret. Until one day it explodes.

This Is How It Always Is is a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.

You can RSVP at our Facebook Event (not required). Contact me with any questions.

November 15th

Why Recycle?
  • To reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.
  • To reduce the consumption of resources like timber, water, and minerals.
  • To reduce the need to generate raw materials, which results in saving energy, reducing pollution, and our carbon footprints.

Recycling Facts
  • Recycling rate went from 7% in 1960 to 32% in 2022.
  • Almost 95% of the aluminum can be recycled, only 65% of it is. Two out of three aluminum cans are recycled.
  • Recycling and reuse activities in the US amount to the creation of 680,000 jobs with $38 billions in wages and generate $5.5 billion in tax revenue.
  • According to EPA nearly 70% of our waste is recyclable.

Take Action - Think “Green” before you shop
  • Do I need it?  Do I already own it?  Can it be repaired and reuse?  Can I borrow it?
  • Is the manufacturer’s business practice sustainable?
  • How “Green” is it?
    • Look for Energy Star, WaterSense, or Safer Choice labeled products.
    • Is it built to last?
    • Is it made with recycled materials or is it recyclable?
    • Buy sustainable and locally produced products, it may reduce environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Buy in bulk; avoid buying products packaged in small and individual amounts.
  • Buy reusable products instead of disposable.
  • Can I buy it used?

Legislative Visit - After Action Report

Picture

Civil Rights Forum

Members of the Civil Rights Forum visited with staffers from Congresswoman Miller-Meeks' office regarding family based immigration.  We advocated that she commit to supporting language in the FY23 Homeland Security Appropriations bills that recapture Visas and end Green Card waste, and that she consider co-sponsoring H.R. 7374, the Jumpstart Act. These requests deal with the large Visa backlogs that have accumulated in the recent past, which keep family members apart. Ultimately, our group would like to protect, preserve, and strengthen the family based immigration system and promote an immigration system informed by empathy and justice.

Our requests were well received and the Congresswoman's Chief of Staff from Washington happened to be at the meeting. He assured us that she was sympathetic to our requests and would discuss them with her and let us know her response. The group felt very good about the meeting and energized from participating in this type of advocacy on behalf of civil rights!

Green Lawn Care Practice - November Green Drinks

Green Lawn Care Practice - November Green Drinks via Zoom
Tuesday, November 1st at 5:00 pm

Environmental Forum

Over 32 states are part of the Mississippi watershed which supplies our drinking water. What you put on or spray in your yard can make a huge impact on your health, the environment, and wildlife.

Runoff from lawn chemicals contributes to the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, the EPA estimates that  5% of air pollution comes from lawn care equipment. The way we treat our lawn has significant impact on the environment.

Christian LaCarte of Sustainable Stewards will share his approach to green lawn care, zero-emission lawn care equipment, natural fertilizer and what you can do to ensure that you have a healthy lawn next spring.

Understanding Iowa Public Measure 1 - the Iowa Gun Amendment

PACG Board of Directors, AAUW, Franciscan Peace Center and others

The proposed amendment to the Iowa Constitution regarding guns is on the ballot November 8th. We are concerned that the wording is confusing and encourage those who are in favor of sensible gun regulations to vote NO to on this measure.

We have previously had submissions to this Progressive Action Update discussing this reckless proposal. You can read more about the educational opportunities members of our extended communities presented regarding this issue here and here.

Our friends the Sisters of St. Francis recently shared this information with us:

Understanding the Iowa Gun Amendment
Iowans are voting on a constitutional amendment in the November 8 election, referred to as "Public Measure 1" on the ballot. If you missed the October 6 webinar featuring guest speakers: Art Roche, Acting Chair, Iowans for Gun Safety; Tom Chapman, Executive Director of the Iowa Catholic Conference; and Dr. Tom Brezenski, Ph.D. Political Science and Public Policy, it is now available to view as a recording.

You may view this important video here.

If you are in favor of common sense gun regulations, VOTE NO ON PUBLIC MEASURE 1 in Iowa on November 8th.

Quad Cities Interfaith, PACG Board of Directors and Civil Rights Forum, and others
The PACG Board of Directors agreed to support the initiative by our friends at Quad Cities Interfaith to provide residents with county identification. Below is a letter regarding a press conference asking the Scott County (Iowa) Board of Supervisors to begin to implement an ID system. Read more about this project here. We encourage our community to become involved  with this campaign.

Dear Ally,

Do you support immigrants, returning citizens, people experiencing homelessness, and their basic right to an identity? Do you support everyone having access to the most basic economic and social aspects of everyday life? Do you want to stand with us in solidarity?

Quad Cities Interfaith, in coalition with 17 organizations and over 200 individuals, is asking Scott County Supervisors to implement a Scott County Community ID. Join us on Saturday Oct. 29th at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church for a press conference on this important campaign! We will present statistical and social service aspects of the programs, as well as the personal perspectives of directly impacted community members.

A first of its kind in the QCA, community identifications are being proposed and supported by elected officials across the Quad Cities! The City of Moline is already moving forward with conversations about a community ID! Earlier this month at a City Council meeting, in collaboration with QCI Leaders, Alderman Alvaro Macias presented on the benefits of a community ID. Come learn more about it!

Speakers at the press conference will include:
Alvaro Macias, City of Moline Alderman
Gloria Mancilla, Quad Cities Interfaith Leader and St. Anthony’s Hispanic Food Pantry Coordinator
Yasmin Gabriel, Quad Cities Interfaith Leader
Ashley Velez, Humility Homes and Services Executive Director
Alex Manuel, Quad Cities Interfaith Youth Leader

In Solidarity,
Quad Cities Interfaith
