PACG Book Club - Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire - June 19, 2018

Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History by Kurt Andersen

Join our PACG Book Club private Facebook Group for Book Club news and discussion.

We had an interesting discussion of The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin on May 15.

Our next book club discussion will be on Tuesday June 19 (third Tuesday) at 6 pm at Fresh Deli (421 W River Dr, Davenport IA). The book is Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History by Kurt Andersen.

I am enjoying the book, and its review of the history of our country from a somewhat different perspective. I think the book brings up many topics for discussion. Here are some discussion questions from Lit Lovers to keep in mind while you read the book.

More information about the PACG Book Club is available at our website.

Meet with Rev. Alexander Sharp of Clergy for a New Drug Policy on June 4, 2018

Meet with Rev. Alexander Sharp of Clergy for a New Drug Policy

When: Monday, June 4 at 6:30 pm
Where: The Center, 1411 Brady St, Davenport IA
Who: Progressive leaders and clergy interested in civil rights and drug policy
Specific Issues: Legalization of marijuana, decriminalization of drugs, racial disparities in sentencing, mass incarceration, opioid epidemic, medical marijuana, forfeiture laws, harm reduction, sentencing reform, drug courts

Progressive Action for the Common Good (PACG) is arranging a meeting for local activists with Rev. Alexander Sharp of Clergy for a New Drug Policy. Clergy for a New Drug Policy works to end the war on drugs and seek a health not punishment response to drug use. Rev. Sharp is from Chicago and would like to meet and strategize with progressive leaders/clergy interested in drug policy reform and related issues (see Specific Issues above).

PACG is considering starting a new issue forum to work on drug policy reform. The current Civil Rights Forum is already concerned about many of these issues. PACG hopes to find activists to work on these issues.

Local leaders and clergy will be interested in learning more about Clergy for a New Drug Policy, with opportunities for future collaboration. This could include educational events or lobbying efforts.

Call or email Alta Price, Board President of PACG (563-505-2996 or altaprice@gmail.com) with questions. We hope to see you June 4 (let Alta know if you are interested but can’t make the meeting).

What You Can Do Now - Help Form a Community Sanctuary Coalition

What You Can Do Now - Help Form a Community Sanctuary Coalition

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities (UUCQC) voted May 20 to be a Sanctuary church. The story was covered in the Quad City Times and there was local television coverage, including from WQAD.

The church would house immigrants facing a final notice of deportation for as long as it takes to get their appeal heard. This keeps families together as potential deportees would not be locked up in detention centers. Very detailed information about the Sanctuary Project is available at the UUCQC website.

The PACG Civil Rights Forum calls upon PACG members and other churches and community groups to step up and help form a community Sanctuary coalition to support and expand these efforts. Attend the weekly Sanctuary Task Force meeting on Tuesdays at 6:45 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities, 3707 Eastern Ave, Davenport to offer your support.

What You Can Do Now - Rally at Grassley's Davenport Office to Keep Families Together

Rally at Senator Grassley's Davenport Office to Keep Families Together!

Join Quad Cities Interfaith (QCI) and allies at a peaceful demonstration at Grassley’s office to tell the Senator to take action to:  “Keep Families Together!”

Monday, May 14th, 5:00 p.m., Senator Chuck Grassley’s Davenport office, 201 W 2nd St, Davenport, Iowa (we will rally out front of the building)

  • This week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced policy that the U.S. government would separate families detained at the U.S./Mexico border.
  • On Wednesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) collaborated with local police in a raid that led to the detention of 32 workers at a concrete factory in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  Children of those detained are being cared for by neighbors; 32 families are without their primary bread winner.  The raid has spread fear among our immigrant neighbors throughout the state, who fear their town could be next.

*This rally is held in solidarity with our friends at the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa, at Grassley’s Cedar Rapids office, also May 14 at 5:00.  Cedar Rapids is also the location of ICE’s local detention center.  Please join us either in Cedar Rapids or Davenport.

Call QCI Organizer Aaron Wagner at 641-990-4594 with questions.

What You Can Do Now - Sign Up for Mueller Firing Rapid Response Rallies

Nobody is Above the Law – Mueller Firing Rapid Response

Donald Trump could be preparing to put himself above the law. We won’t allow it.

Trump will create a constitutional crisis if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller, or attempts to compromise the investigation by other means.

Our response in the hours following a potential power grab will dictate what happens next – whether Congress will stand up to Trump or allow him to move our democracy toward authoritarianism.

MoveOn is preparing to hold emergency “Nobody is Above the Law” rallies around the country, in the event they are needed- 900+ of them and counting, in every state, with 350,000 RSVPs to date!
