Call to Action! Contact your Iowa legislators about bills affecting immigrants

Call to Action! Contact your Iowa legislators now!

Civil Rights Forum

Picture
Various bills that attack immigrants have been introduced into both the Iowa House of Representative and the Iowa Senate. The bills reject "Iowa Nice" ideals and could destroy opportunities of prosperous futures for those impacted and have negative ramifications across the state. Our legislators should be focusing on proposals that strengthen our communities versus proposing solutions to problems that do not exist.

TAKE ACTION NOW by letting your Iowa legislators know how you feel about these bills! Learn the details of each one through the links below. The legislative voting process in Iowa is very fast and we expect that they will try to pass these sometime this month. Contact them today! And again this week!

Making us a state that is not migrant friendly will have a negative impact on Iowa's economy. Read the attached pdf below from the American Immigration Council that explains: As neighbors, business owners, taxpayers (emphasis added), and workers, immigrants are an integral part of Iowa’s diverse and thriving communities and make extensive contributions that benefit all. You may read the entire article, Map the Impact - Immigrants in Iowa, here or download the pdf attached below. Make sure your friends and family educate themselves on the important roles that immigrants play in our state!

Use this link to find the names of your Iowa State legislators. Senator Scott Webster of Bettendorf (District 47), has been identified as a key legislator to contact. His contact information can be found on this link. Call, email or write to him!

Some of the talking points to bring up with your legislators are:
  • Migration policy is typically handled at the federal level.
  • What are the problems that these “solutions” address?
  • How do these bills accomplish anything productive?

Here are the bills that we are concerned about. Click on the blue name to read each one. SF stands for Senate File and HF stands for House File.
  • SF 2340 would create a state crime of “illegal entry into the state by an alien.” This bill is believed to be pre-empted by federal law and the U.S. Constitution. It is problematic that this bill would explicitly allow state officials to prosecute an individual for state immigration crimes, even if that person’s application for immigration relief is pending before federal authorities. Read a summary of SF 2340 here.
  • HF 2112 would create the state crime of “smuggling of persons.” The language of the bill is vague. Does “encourage” or “induce” a person to remain in the U.S. mean providing food or shelter to an immigrant? Does it mean a person sending money home to a family? That should not be out of bounds. Read a summary of HF 2112 here.
  • HF 2320 would forbid state universities and community colleges from offering in-state tuition to residents of Iowa unless they can prove “lawful presence.” Young people should not be hindered from working towards a promising future only because they were brought to the United States by their parents at a young age without legal status. As state and local taxpayers, we have already invested in the education of these young people for many years and in some cases this proposal might stop us from getting a return on our investment. Read a summary of HF 2320 here.
  • SF 108 would make use of the voluntary federal “e-verify” program mandatory for employers in Iowa. E-verify is a web-based system that allows enrolled employers to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. This bill is duplicative in part because the federal government is already authorized to investigate employment violations in this context. Read a summary of SF 108 here.

Project Renewal youth show I Am the Future  video - After Action Report

Picture
Kids from Project Renewal left to right in photo are Masion Powell (black t-shirt), Olivia Buxbaum-Lara (red shirt), Joan Vazquez (red shirt) and Tamera Phillips (blue t-shirt)
Project Renewal (PR) students who attended the PACG presentation at the Figge Art Museum had their interest piqued after watching the I Am the Future film. They especially like learning about the local residents in the Quad Cities experiences and how their actions and this history makes a difference in our current lives and our future.

The PR students wanted to introduce and share this film with the rest of the kids at Project Renewal one day after school. Glenda Guster was invited to help facilitate this presentation and discussion. After viewing the film, our PR students, Masion, Olivia, Joan and Tamera led the Q & A with some questions:  Did they recognize anyone in the film? Do you know what activism is? What do you do or can you do to help others? Other comments included how no matter your age, skin color, ethnicity, etc., in order for change it takes all kinds of people. An action call concluded our gathering with the importance of voting for our representatives and to encourage adults in our lives to vote.

Two Obscure Cases about Fish May Disempower Health Agencies

Health Care Reform Forum

SCOTUS appears poised to substitute its judgment for that of career scientists

Federal regulation led by career professionals in administrative agencies keeps Americans healthy and safe. Congress empowers and relies on the scientific and technical expertise of regulatory agencies to implement and achieve broad health and safety goals, spanning clean air and water, healthcare, disaster preparedness, disease control, workplace safety, and safe foods and drugs.

But interest groups backed by major private sector financing have been working to undermine the agencies' regulatory authority through litigation. And now, the Supreme Court is set to decide two cases that will likely upend how the agencies interpret and implement the statutes they are empowered to administer.

Let's also remember an important fact: Federal agencies are not simply empowered to safeguard the public's health; it is their duty, and every American should want career professionals to issue rules that keep us healthy and safe, and that safeguard our environment.

Read more about these upcoming Supreme Court cases and the implications for public safety.

Explore the Free Mom Hugs website to learn more about this amazing organization. Here's a bit about founding member, Sara Cunningham: On Saturday, June 20, 2015, Sara wore a homemade button with the words “Free Mom Hugs” to the Oklahoma City Pride Festival. She offered hugs to anyone who made eye contact. The first hug Sara gave was to a beautiful girl who whispered, “It’s been four years since I got a hug from my mom because I’m a lesbian.” Sara embraced her and hundreds more that day, and many shared similar stories with every embrace.

We can really use this kind of support in Iowa! As the Iowa State leader of Free Mom Hugs (FMH) I travel to our 6 regions to network. Iowa also has 7 Facebook groups that I moderate. Last year we attended 40 LGBTQ+ events locally in the QC and another 20 LGBTQ+ statewide. I’m always looking for more event coordinators across the state. I only have two right now - one in Central and one in Northwest. Contact me to get involved or with any questions.

Here's the Facebook link for Free Mom Hugs - Quad Cities. Our group here co-hosted Clocks-giving in November. We recently connected to PACG to join the Racial Equality Rally as a way to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day (Saturday, February 17th). Consider buying some Free Mom Hugs merch for the Pride celebrations in June! And then, of course, wear it year-round!

For March we will read two of the most banned books in the United States. They are relatively short and cover similar themes. We'll try meeting in person again, and hope for good weather!

Here is more about Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe from Goodreads:

"In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia's intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma of pap smears. Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: it is a useful and touching guide on gender identity—what it means and how to think about it—for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere."

Here is more about All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson from Goodreads:

"In a series of personal essays, prominent journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George M. Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. From the memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five, to flea marketing with his loving grandmother, to his first sexual relationships, this young-adult memoir weaves together the trials and triumphs faced by Black queer boys."

"Both a primer for teens eager to be allies as well as a reassuring testimony for young queer men of color, All Boys Aren't Blue covers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy. Johnson's emotionally frank style of writing will appeal directly to young adults."

The Touching Story Behind Tracy Chapman's Iconic Grammys "Fast Car" Performance

Gender Equity Forum

From Them.us: Tracy Chapman’s surprise performance of “Fast Car” at the Grammys with country singer Luke Combs will likely go down in history as one of those iconic awards show moments that people still discuss decades later.

Considering that the singer hasn’t done a live TV performance since 2015...the duet felt like a bit of a miracle.

Read the article here about how Luke Combs honored the writer of this incredible song. If you haven't seen their duet yet, it is a definite mood-lifter. Here's hoping that we all have someone who appreciates us like Luke Combs appreciates Tracy Chapman!
