Changing Systems, Changing Ourselves Webinar - Update
Tuesday, January 28th at 7:00 pm

At home or at
the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities
3704 Eastern Av, Davenport (map)

Civil Rights Forum

The PACG Civil Rights Forum invites you to sign up for a five-session monthly online series on immigration and race sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, Church World Service, Freedom for Immigrants, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, and the Unitarian Universalist Association. The sessions are the fourth Tuesday of the month, usually from 7 - 8:30 pm central time.

Although you can sign up as an individual, there will be a group showing at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Quad Cities in the Board room to facilitate discussion after the webinars.

The January 28th session explores "anti-racist practice, to reflect on how to show up consciously to work alongside those most impacted by injustice, with caucus groups for people of color and white people."

For more information and to register, sign up at the American Friends Service Committee website.

Green Drinks - After Action Report
Monday, December 2nd at 5:00 pm

Huckleberry's, Rock Island

Environmental

Green Drinks met in November with a presentation from Lori McCollum about the climate crisis that included a slide presentation from the Climate Reality Training she attended last summer. This presentation is available to any group or organization upon request.

Amy Kay, from the Public Works Department in Davenport discussed their sustainability projects. It was very interesting, and will hopefully lead to collaboration and expansion of their sustainability projects.

The December meeting kicked off our new day and location. We will be meeting in 2020 at Huckleberries in Rock Island on the first Tuesday of each month from 5-7 pm in their overflow room. This allows a quieter and larger space for speakers and networking.  Upcoming speakers include: January - Sarah Gardner from BiState Regional Planning on Electric Vehicles; February - Deb Heitman from the Davenport Schools on their Green Ribbon Award; and March - Pete Vogel from QC Food Rescue to discuss their work to reduce food waste and help those who are food insecure. We hope to see you all there.

August & September Green Drinks - After Action Report

Green Drinks for August and September - After Action Report

Environmental Forum - Green Drinks!

August

Our August Green Drinks included an excellent presentation on Rain Gardens by Andy Parer, and we learned about how to choose native plants that have more extensive root systems to absorb rain and groundwater. Some of these plants are available each spring from local county conservation programs, as well as local gardening shops or online. In the city of Rock Island, you can receive financial support for putting in a rain garden, and then have your sewer fees reduced quarterly because you will have less run off.

September

Our September Green Drinks included a presentation by Dr. Cheryl True about Plant Based Diets. Dr. True discussed general ways to improve your lifestyle, but focused on plant based diets, which not only decrease health problems but help the environment. Even if you don't want to go completely vegetarian, you can go to meatless Mondays or reduce the size of your meat servings and increasing the vegetables and fruits on your plate.
An additional bonus is that each month a few staff from local presidential campaigns come by. They offer up current information about policies their respective candidates endorse.

Check out www.greendrinks.org/IA/QuadCities for more details about our group. We meet at Fresh Deli from 5-7 pm on the last Thursday of each month. We will take November and December off due to the holidays. We hope to see you on October 31st.

Green Drinks Quad Cities in the Quad-City Times

Environmental Forum's Green Drinks-Quad Cities in Local Press

Enviro-minded people invited to new group
from the Quad-City Times - March 20, 2019
Alma Gaul agaul@qctimes.com

Quad-Citians interested in the environment and conservation are invited to meet like-minded people Thursday, March 28, at the Fresh Deli restaurant at the Freight House, 421 W. River Drive, Davenport.

The gathering from 5-7 p.m. will be the first meeting of a group called Green Drinks Quad-Cities, a local affiliate of an international organization that was formed in London in 1989 and now has groups in 500 cities.

The purpose of Green Drinks is for people to get together, talk, exchange ideas about environmental issues, maybe even have fun and make new friends, said organizer Lori O'Dell McCollum, of Rock Island, representing Progressive Action for the Common Good, a Quad-City group that promotes community betterment and progressive values.

The Green Drinks group will meet the last Thursday of every month and is open to anyone.

While there are lots of environmental/conservation groups in the Quad-Cities, "most people don't know each other," McCollum said. "It will be a loosely formed networking group; it doesn't have a specific agenda," she said of Green Drinks. "We'll just wait and see what people want to do. A few groups are structured and have speakers. Every group seems to do something different."

To spread the word, McCollum is contacting a wide swath of entities in the public, private, nonprofit and educational sectors. This includes Sierra Club, Partners of Scott County Watersheds, Audubon Society, Earth Keepers, Niabi Zoo, Food Rescue, university Extension services, state departments of natural resources, The Nature Conservancy, Living Lands & Waters, Nahant Marsh, area colleges and others.

In Iowa, there are Green Drinks groups in Des Moines, Iowa City, Ames and elsewhere; in Illinois, groups have organized in the Chicago area as well as Peoria.
