Note: Our next PACG Book Club discussion will be one week late, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. We will not meet in December.

In November, we will read and discuss Homesick: Why Housing is Unaffordable and How We Can Change It by Brendan O'Brien. Brendan is the son of Kevin and Eileen O'Brien, long-time supporters of PACG. Kevin told me about his son's book at the PACG Picnic & Pie Auction this year. Brendan also gave a few presentations recently in the Quad Cities about his book and the issue of affordable housing. Ed Tibbets also interviewed the author and wrote an interesting article on Substack. We felt this would be a great read and a timely topic. We will also try to arrange a joint book club discussion in early 2024 with the Project Now book club. It would be great if we can arrange to have the author give another presentation to our joint book clubs!

Here is more information about the book from Goodreads:

Nobody who sits in traffic on Sedona, Arizona’s main stretch or stands shoulder-to-shoulder in its many souvenir shops would call it a ghost town.

Neither would anyone renting a room for $2,000 a month or buying a house for a half-million dollars. And yet the people who built this small town and made it a community are being pushed further and further out. Their home is being sold out from under their feet.

In studying the impact of short-term rentals, Brendan O'Brien saw something similar happening in places ranging from Bend, Oregon, to Bar Harbor, Maine. But it isn't just short-term rentals, and it's not just tourism towns. Neighborhoods in Austin and Atlanta have become rows of investment properties. Longtime residents in Spokane and Boston have been replaced by new, high-salaried remote workers. Across the country, a level of unaffordable housing that once seemed unique to global cities like New York and San Francisco has become the norm, with nearly a third of all US households considered housing cost burdened.

This situation has been abetted by the direct actions of developers, politicians, and existing homeowners who have sought to drive up the cost of housing. But it's mostly happened due to a society-wide refusal to see housing as anything more than real estate, another product available to the highest bidder. This trend of putting local housing on a global market has worsened in recent years but is nothing new. Housing in the United States has always been marred by racial and income inequality that mocks the country’s highest ideals.

Deeply researched and deeply felt,  Homesick  argues that we can be so much better. And we can start where we live.

I Am the Future at the Putnam - After Action Report

Picture
Our I Am the Future film moderator, AbdurRhamaan (Abdur) Howard, and his cousin, Chase

PACG is proud to have collaborated with community partners from The Putnam Museum and Science Center, WQPT: PBS, and WVIK: NPR, to present a special film screening of I am the Future: Standing on the Shoulders of the Past, last Sunday, October 22nd. As progressives, we believe that it is important for our community to come together to learn about and discuss the issues surrounding civil rights activism. We hosted this free, family-friendly event to not only showcase this incredible film, but also to provide an opportunity for our community to engage in meaningful conversations about how we can all be activists for civil rights. This film is a powerful portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of local civil rights activists and serves as an inspiring call to action for all those who believe in equality and justice.

In early 2022, as her PACG presidency began, Glenda Guster decided that she wanted to interview acquaintances of hers who had important social justice experiences in the mid-20th century for an article for our Progressive Action Update (PAU) weekly newsletter. But some members of PACG suggested that we videotape these people to preserve the history firsthand. So, PACG did what it often does - we established a committee to work on this idea!

It was decided that our goals for this project included
  • preserving local Black history
  • educating our communities, and
  • inspiring our membership in activism

With this in mind, we approached four of Glenda's friends and asked if we could interview them about their experiences. The following individuals agreed to speak to us about their experiences: Attorney Catherine (Kitty) Alexander, Rev. Gabriel Barber III, Dr. Henry Brockington, former Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba, and student moderator AbdurRahmaan (Abdur) Howard. The film’s stars, with the exception of Catherine (Kitty) Alexander, were special guests at our event at the Putnam this week and participated in an enlightening Q&A session following the film. Approximately 60 adults and 25 children were in attendance. Read more about our film stars at this blog post.

Other community organizations participated in tabling and conversation prior to the film screening. We want to thank our friends doing important social justice work in the community for attending: Davenport Civil Rights Commission, NAACP-Davenport Branch #4019, One Human Family QCA, and The Project of the Quad Cities.

Thank you to everyone involved in the creation of this film, our hosts and sponsors, and all of our friends, members and supporters for attending and making it such a great event!

And if you just want to watch our film, the latest version is here.

Scholastic Books changes from book bans  - No Hate In Our States

Scholastic Book Fairs Are Putting Some “Diverse Titles” in a Separate Category

Scholastic employees, librarians, and authors have slammed the decision.

Many former public school kids in the U.S. look back on the Scholastic Book Fair with fondness. But the company recently made a decision about book fairs that is proving controversial, by putting “diverse” books in a separate category and making them an optional offering at elementary school book fairs.

Discussion of the decision has been swirling on social media for weeks and started gaining steam last week when the feminist blog The Mary Sue reported on the decision. Scholastic issued a statement in response to the controversy on Friday, stating that the allegation that the company puts all of its diverse titles into an optional case is a “misconception.” However, the statement went on to say that they have indeed created an “additional collection” called “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice” for elementary schools, which the company says they made as a way of protecting educators from the legal entanglements they could face as a result of book bans.

“There is now enacted or pending legislation in more than 30 U.S. states prohibiting certain kinds of books from being in schools – mostly LGBTQIA+ titles and books that engage with the presence of racism in our country,” the statement reads. “Because Scholastic Book Fairs are invited into schools, where books can be purchased by kids on their own, these laws create an almost impossible dilemma: back away from these titles or risk making teachers, librarians, and volunteers vulnerable to being fired, sued, or prosecuted.”

The company claimed that the only other option would be to not offer the books at all. But the decision was slammed by many people, including authors. Olivia Wolfgang-Smith, a novelist who is also a senior digital manager at Scholastic, posted to X on Sunday to call the decision “a cowardly, demoralizing, and harmful way for Scholastic to use its power in this industry.”

Wolfgang-Smith went on to note that Scholastic is the largest publisher and distributor of children’s books in the world, and that the company “could be using its position to push back and advocate for the children it claims to serve.”

Molly Ostertag, a cartoonist who has worked on a number of titles for Scholastic and who has written for The Owl House, also posted to X on Sunday to speak out against the decision, sharing the text of a speech she gave at a party for Scholastic’s graphic novel imprint.

“It seems to be a good faith effort to protect teachers and librarians, and I understand the reasoning, but I feel the need to stand up tonight and say that I think this is a grave miscalculation,” she said. “It doesn’t come across as anything but an attempt to compromise with, frankly, fascist laws.”

A September report from the literary advocacy group PEN America found that book bans had increased by 33% during the 2022-2023 school year, despite the fact that the majority of Americans don’t support them. 30% of book bans applied to books that represent LGBTQ+ identities. And yet, people are still buying LGBTQ+ books en masse, with one report finding that sales of queer fiction have jumped 173% since 2019.  (See the entire article here at Them.us.)

UPDATE to this post (before we published it in the Progressive Action Update): The article at Them.us referenced above was dated October 17, 2023. As of October 26th, a new article says that Scholastic has changed their minds! They heard our outrage! Scholastic removes optional diverse book section after controversy is a follow-up news story from ABC. Read that article here.

PACG’s new (easier) email address!

A Message from the Board
Picture
In 2005 when PACG was founded, there were few groups working on progressive issues in the Quad Cities, so it was important that our email address reflected our work. But all these years later it is time to simplify things for our members and community.

With that in mind, we have established a new Gmail address that is similar to our website’s. If you can remember PACGQC you can easily email us or check our online presence. And rest assured, if you use our old email address we will still get your message.

We are excited that we can continue to make things easier for all of us!

Medicare “Advantage” isn’t - Of Interest to Our Forum Members

Medicare “Advantage” - well, it isn't

Health Care Reform Forum
Blog for Iowa

Medicare Advantage overbills by $140 BILLION a year!
That is enough to end Medicare premiums and add services.

Physicians For a National Health Policy (PNHP) released a scathing report on the HUGE amount of money that so-called “Medicare Advantage” is over billing. It’s important to know that Medicare Advantage is NOT a Medicare plan and it is NOT any sort of advantage. It is private insurance paid for by the government.

The report published Wednesday estimates that privately run, government-funded Medicare Advantage plans are overcharging U.S. taxpayers by up to $140 billion per year, a sum that could be used to completely eliminate Medicare Part B premiums or fully fund Medicare’s prescription drug program.

PNHP has been working on reforming America’s health care for decades. As I often say, America pays twice as much for half the care that all other industrialized countries get. This video is three members of congress pointing out that “Medicare Advantage” is simply a corporate ripoff.

Watch a great (short) video and read the entire article at Blog for Iowa.
