A Secret Civil Rights Kitchen: Georgia Gilmore and the Club From Nowhere

In the 1950s, a group of Montgomery, Alabama women baked goods to help fund the Montgomery bus boycott. Known as "the Club from Nowhere" the group was led by Georgia Gilmore, one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights era.

A Toast to the New Administration

A Message from the President

Dear Progressives,

I wanted to share with everyone the Toast given at the Inauguration 2021 Virtual Parade and Dance Party this week:

"Here we are... January 20, 2021. I know many of you thought this day would never come! And what a gorgeous day it was in DC today - and all went peacefully, so let's include a thanks for that in our toast.

"Let's also toast to our front-line workers, who have been tirelessly devoted to the American people during this pandemic. I'd also like to include a moment of silence in honor of the victims of Covid.

"Now, for the happy part: Toasting to Joe Biden's principles of Decency, Unity, and Competence.

"Everyone raise your glasses in honor of our new 46th President and our 1st woman Vice President.

"May they lead our nation with grace and dignity. May they surround themselves with informed advisors. May they listen to all points of view and act in the best interest of the US people. May they bring back respect to the United States in the global arena. May they work tirelessly for racial justice, that is so needed in our country. Finally, may they lead with inclusivity so that all Americans are proud to call them our leaders.

"I am excited about the possibilities that the next four years will bring and I know you all are too. So, raise your glasses and CHEERS to President Biden and Vice President Harris!"

Of Interest to Our Community - Labor and Civil Rights File CASPA in Iowa

Eight Civil Rights and Labor Organizations File CASPA Complaint Against Iowa OSHA

Indiana, Illinois, Iowa Foundation for Fair Contracting

Indiana, Illinois, Iowa Foundation for Fair Contracting, in partnership with several other Iowa organizations, filed a Complaint Against State Plan Administration with the Federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration this past Friday, documenting the failures of Iowa OSHA to enforce workplace safety laws during the COVID-19 pandemic. Iowa is one of a few dozen states that administer their own OSHA program, versus having the Federal government do so. As has been documented in our complaint, officials from Iowa OSHA are violating their own policies, state law and federal statutes in how they are administering Iowa's state OSHA program. Understanding that worker safety is community safety, Iowa OSHA's failure to keep workers safe is yet another contributing factor to the explosion of coronavirus infection rates across Iowa.

Inauguration 2021
Virtual Parade and Dance Party! -
After Action Report

A Message from the President

PACG held a virtual parade and dance party in honor of the 2021 Inauguration. The event was very successful and a good time was had by all!

What happens at a virtual parade and dance party?
Picture
President Allison Ambrose shows off her parade sign and patriotic attire!
We played the PACG Word Game, had a Speed Scavenger Hunt, discussed our hopes for the Biden administration and gave a toast to our new President and Vice President.

However, the biggest hit of the evening was being able to let loose and dance with joy in celebration of the events in Washington, DC that day. People of all ages showed off their own parade signs and patriotic attire during the dancing part of the celebration so that our judges could determine the best "parader" and "patriotic attire.” Many enjoyed being able to watch the dancers and paraders who were being spotlighted via Zoom while listening to the upbeat music played by the party's DJ, Andy Fischer-Price, who was a great entertainer during the entire event.

DJ Andy Fischer-Price kept the party rocking with his Spotify "PACG Inauguration Day!!!" playlist!

Prize winners were as follows:

PACG Word Game - Cath Bolcom wins $10 gift certificate to Oh So Sweet by Tiphanie bakery in Davenport.

Speed Scavenger Hunt - Heather Brinkschroeder, Sue Normoyle, Cath Bolkcom, and Caryn Unsicker each win a $5 gift certificate from either  the Brewed Book or Coffee Revolution coffee  shops in Davenport.

Paraders Runners Up - Siblings and 3rd Graders Max and Ellie (tied for 2nd runner up); and Alice Traylor (1st runner up) each get a $5 gift certificate from the Brewed Book or Coffee Revolution coffee shops in Davenport.

Best Parader - Lisa Killinger wins a $25 gift certificate to the Raygun store based in Des Moines.

Patriotic Attire Runners Up - Siblings and 3rd Graders Max and Ellie (tied for 1st and 2nd runners up) each get a $5 gift certificate from Oh So Sweet by Tiphanie bakery in Davenport.

Best Patriotic Attire - Caryn Unsicker wins a $25 gift certificate to the Raygun store based in Des Moines.

Thanks to everyone who worked hard to put together such a successful event and to all of you in our community who participate. Cheers to 2021!

PACG Book Club for March 2021
Monday, March 15th at 5:30 pm via Zoom

Monday, March 15th at 5:30 pm via Zoom - The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich
From the Goodreads link above: "Based on the extraordinary life of National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s  grandfather who worked as a night watchman and carried the fight against Native dispossession from rural North Dakota all the way to Washington, D.C., this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and gravity and unfolds with the elegant prose, sly humor, and depth of feeling of a master craftsman."

Louise Erdrich is an important Native American author. The PACG Book Club decided to read and discuss this book to expand on our racial justice theme by including Native American issues and authors.

A Conversation Between Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Poet Robert Penn Warren

Picture
"Episode #004 utilizes two oral history interviews conducted by poet/author Robert Penn Warren in 1964 with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These interviews were part of a larger research project documenting the Civil Rights Movement, a project that would be published in 1965 in the form of the book Who Speaks for the Negro?. This episode creates a conversation, through Robert Penn Warren, between Dr. King and Malcolm X about their philosophies pertaining to the use of violent or nonviolent methods to achieve their goals."
