CIVIL RIGHTS

Moderator: Rich Hendricks

From Cathy Bolkcom:

I am chairing events to commemorate 40 years of service of HELP Legal Assistancein Scott County. I served as a paralegal at Legal Aid in the 1970’s and it propelled me into community organizing.

Please note the date of April 8. We will be having a day long Equal Access to Justice Summit at St. Ambrose University’s Rogalski Center.  The purpose of the Summit in to educate the public, students and lawyers about poverty law and social  justice issues.  There will be CLE courses for lawyers, CEU’s for social workers and a public track of workshops  of interest to all citizens who care about social justice.

There will be workshops on the Innocence Project with Brain Farrell, Predatory Lendingwith Sen. Joe Bolkcom, Immigration with Father David Vasquez (of the Postville raids) and immigration attorney Karla Steele, a panel onDomestic Violence and a plenary session on Maintaining an Independent Judiciary with Supreme Court Justices and US District Court Judge Pratt.

Judge Pratt will give a luncheon keynote on “Equal Access to Justice” and we will finish the day with a wine and hors’ d’oeuvres reception with longtime legal aid advocate Congressman Bruce Braley.

Lunch will be $10.  Let me know if you would like to pre-register.  More information to follow.  It promises to be a very exciting day. Email me at cbarts4@aol.com

The Civil Rights Forum is meeting with QC Pride every first Saturday at Metro Community Church of the Quad Cities, 3019 N. Harrison, Davenport at 3:00 pm. QC Pridefest is planned for Saturday, June 4th this year from 12 noon to 12 midnight.  Vendor applications are available at www.qcpride.org.

There is also a QC Pridefest fundraiser planned for Friday, April 22nd from 7 – 9 pm at the Blackhawk Hote and the public is invited and encouraged to come out to support diversity.
