MEDIA REFORM
Moderator: Steve Drucker
Our watchdog group meets MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, AT DOWNTOWN DAVENPORT LIBRARY, in the downstairs Film Room, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45. The Big Bone thrown to everyone fed up with biassed “reporting” is this: “HOW SHALL WE ENGAGE OUR LOCAL MEDIA DURING THE NEXT 14 MONTHS?” To be effective, we must focus our energy on specific, deadlined, do-able actions. We will gnaw on three questions: 1) How shall we promote our progressive issues in our local media? 2) How shall we respond to their negative, biassed reporting? and 3) How shall we spotlight the positive events that our media are ignoring?
When we’re done jaw-boning, we will make an Action Plan that involves all of us in the Media Forum AND INVITES EVERYONE IN PACG TO TAKE A PIECE OF THIS AS YOUR OWN. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. All members and interested persons are invited to this Forum if you’re ready to talk back to the conservative media that think they can say, show, and do any irrational, destructive thing they damn well please. Are you ready to stand up and speak out? Call me and say you’re coming! cell 309-781-8004
This forum will meet again on Thursday, April 14th, 5:30pm at Cobblestone Place, 1212 W. 3rd St in Davenport – at the ite of the new PACG office! We will be working on mapping out corporate media interests. Join us! Call Steve for more info, (309)781-8004.
Low Power FM Radio
Have you had enough of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and other right wing sociopaths flooding the airwaves with lies and hatred? Everyone interested in taking the next step toward creating our own progressive radio station: please join us this Monday, March 14th, to share information and make decisions toward getting a license for our very own station. You don’t have to be tech savvy, just curious and wondering how you can be part of an historic development in the Quad-Cities. Butterworth Center, French room, at 6:30 pm. Up the stairs, turn left and left again. Bring a sandwich if you like. For more info, take a look at www.prometheusradio.org. Come join the adventure!
For those who would like to hear Progressive Radio in the Quad-Cities, here is the time and place to learn how to make it happen. Dave Bradley, an expert on Low Power FM radio, will speak to the Media Reform Forum on Thursday, Feb. 17th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Butterworth Center. The weather has hindered him from coming twice, but the third time is the charm! We expect to be in the Crafts Room downstairs which can be accessed from steps on the north side or a door usually open in the drive-thru. There will be signs. Call me with questions or suggestions. Steve Drucker 309-593-2728 or 309-781-8004.
Not Seen On TV: The Truth About Media’s Effects on Children
Wednesday, Feb 25th, there is a workshop sponsored by the Illinois Regional Office of Education and Black Hawk Area Special Education District on “The Truth About Media’s Effect on Children” presented by Dr. Doug Gentile. It is at the I -Wireless Center in Moline. Dr. Gentile will explain the positive and negative impacts that media have on children. Topics will include brain development, school performance, media violence and video games. He will demonstrate how science has documented four major effects of media violence, how large these effects are and what we can do about this impact. Dr. Gentile will provide practical advice for parents, teachers and other adults to supervise game playing.
I am looking forward to his workshop and encourage anyone who has children or works with children to attend this presentation.
To register call Julie at ROE 309-796-1111. The cost is $20 which includes lunch.
When I called on Friday there were openings for 30 to 40 more registrants. CEU and CPDUs are available for those who need the hours. This is a great opportunity!
