The Plastic Free Foundation in Australia initiated the annual Plastic Free July campaign in 2011 to challenge world citizens to stop plastic pollution. By 2019 this global plastic free movement had over 250 million participants. They avoided over 900,000 tons of plastic waste, which included single-use beverage containers, straws, plastic bags, packaging materials, and more.
